Mustangs suffer heartbreaking loss in overtime to close season

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's hockey team suffered a heartbreaking loss Saturday afternoon in overtime, as visiting SUNY Canton claimed the 3-2 extra time victory in the season finale on the Mustangs home ice in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville women's ice hockey saw their season come to a close Saturday afternoon, suffering a heartbreaking overtime loss as visiting SUNY Canton snagged a 3-2 victory on the Mustangs home ice in Morrisville.
  • The victory earned the Roos the final slot in the SUNYAC playoffs.
  • Canton held a 1-0 lead early on, netting the games first tally 4:52 in and maintained that advantage for just over 20 minutes of play until Avery Holland (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) evened the contest for the Mustangs at the 5:25 mark with her score.
  • Zoe Leas (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Tilly Couture (Bedford, N.S.) registered the assists.
  • Minutes later, senior Allie Davidson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) gave the hosts the 2-1 advantage with her 37th of her career, putting away the goal off the feed from fellow seniors Kate Mabey (Guelph, Ont.) and Hailee Easson (Okotoks, Alta.).
  • Canton snuck one past Mustang senior netminder Elizabeth Timby (Getzville, N.Y.) 7:34 into the third to even the score at two, and despite efforts by both teams to put the winning tally on the board in regulation, an overtime period would be needed to decide the victor.
  • Morrisville was whistled for a penalty at the conclusion of regulation, giving Canton the power play opportunity in overtime, and 1:54 in they capitalized chipping in the game winning tally.
  • Isabella Paswaters notched the game tying score, along with game winner, for the Roos.
  • Timby finished with 28 stops in the loss for Morrisville.
  • Townsey turned aside 18 in the win for Canton.
