Sanders banks 33 in Mustang overtime win at Canton

CANTON, N.Y. – SUNY Morrisville men's basketball senior guard Kareem Sanders (Schenectady, N.Y.) posted a career-high 33 points Friday to lead the visiting Mustangs past SUNY Canton in a thrilling overtime 83-81 SUNYAC battle in Canton.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Senior guard Kareem Sanders (Schenectady, N.Y.) posted a collegiate high 33 points Friday night, including a banked jumper with four seconds remaining in extra time, to lead the visiting SUNY Morrisville Mustangs past host SUNY Canton 83-81 in SUNYAC action in Canton.
  • Canton held a two-point lead with 1:22 left in regulation, but Sanders posted a tying layup with 55 ticks remaining, making it a 67-all ball game.
  • The Roos had a wide open look from long range, but the shot hit off the rim and out of bounds for the visitors who then attempted one of their own with 27 seconds to go.
  • Canton had the chance to net the winning bucket with the layup attempt as time wound down in regulation, but the shot attempt was blocked by Yvan Fils-Aime (Dix Hills, N.Y.) forcing the extra period.
  • In overtime, Canton led by five with 1:14 showing on the clock, and a three-point play from Kaelem Haskins (Liverpool, N.Y.) cut it to two with 1:04 to go, but Canton responded with a jumper on the opposite end to regain the multi-possession lead with just over a minute remaining.
  • Sanders brought the Mustangs within one with a three-pointer with 32 ticks to go, before tying the contest at 81 as he hit the front end of two free throws with nine seconds remaining.
  • Morrisville maintained possession with the team rebound off the missed second attempt, and found Sanders on the right wing, banking in the mid-range jumper for the 83-81 lead with four seconds to go.
  • Canton had one last effort following a timeout with two seconds left, but the three fell short of the basket and Morrisville collected the thrilling win.
  • Sanders had four rebounds to go along with his 33 points, while Haskins also posted a collegiate high 12 points, adding six boards and four assists.
  • Fils-Aime had seven points and a team best 11 rebounds off the bench, blocking two, while Jacob Works (Liverpool, N.Y.) added 11 points in the victory.
