Sanders season high leads Morrisville men to series sweep of Oneonta

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – SUNY Morrisville men's basketball completed the SUNYAC series sweep of SUNY Oneonta Saturday afternoon, downing the Red Dragons by a 80-74 final score on Senior Day in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville men's basketball, led by senior Kareem Sanders (Schenectady, N.Y.) celebrated senior day in the Mustang Valley Saturday afternoon as they downed visiting SUNY Oneonta 80-74 to complete the series sweep of the Dragons in SUNYAC action.
  • Sanders put together a season high 26 points, nearly missing the double-double as he snagged a team best eight rebounds in the win.
  • Sixteen of Sanders points came in the second half.
  • Jacob Works (Liverpool, N.Y.) added nine off the bench for the Mustangs, while teammate Yvan Fils-Aime (Dix Hills, N.Y.) collected eight points to go along with six rebounds.
  • Fellow senior Nokio Kennedy posted seven points and three assists, while Jordan Coard (Jamaica, N.Y.) chipped in four points and three rebounds.
  • Avion Grainger (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Kaelem Haskins (Liverpool, N.Y.) each added eight points off the bench to add to the win.
  • Oneonta held the lead for a majority of the first half before a three-point play by Haskins evened the contest at 26 with 3:42 to go in the opening half.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Fils-Aime gave Morrisville the four-point lead before Oneonta again made it a one-possession game with just over a minute remaining before half.
  • Sanders and Works each posted a score in the paint, sending the Mustangs into the break with the six point edge.
  • Morrisville increased their lead to as many as 15 in the second half, before the Red Dragons chipped away and made if a four-point game with 25 seconds remaining.
  • Kennedy hit the back end of a free throw, and CJ McCullum (Bronx, N.Y.) followed with another giving Morrisville the cushion to secure the win.
  • Elijah Castillo led Oneonta's efforts with 25 points, collecting four steals while three additional teammates notched double figures in the loss.
  • Morrisville nearly doubled up Oneonta in play in the paint, 48-26 and had bench play contribute to the win as they outgained the Dragons 29-7.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will return to the court next Friday on the road at Canton, before wrapping up the regular season with a second bout with Oswego Saturday.
