Morrisville men hold off Cardinals, collect 86-80 win over Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's basketball staved off a persistent Cardinal squad Saturday afternoon, earning the 86-80 SUNYAC win on the road at Plattsburgh.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's basketball picked up an 86-80 SUNYAC win over host Plattsburgh State Saturday afternoon, improving to 6-5 in league action to date on the season.
  • Morrisville staved off the persistent Cardinal squad, securing the win from the free throw line in the final 17 seconds of play.
  • The Mustangs held an 11-point lead with just under a minute to go before Plattsburgh nailed a three-pointer to cut the deficit to eight with 46 ticks remaining.
  • An immediate foul sent CJ McCullum (Bronx, N.Y.) to the free throw line, where he converted 1-of-2, before a fast break layup six seconds later cut the deficit to seven for the Cardinals.
  • McCullum added two more free throws after the immediate foul, and Plattsburgh responded with a layup on the opposite end, before sending Kareem Sanders (Schenectady, N.Y.) to the line for another two with 26 seconds remaining.
  • Sanders hit the front end of the two shot opportunity, and Plattsburgh responded with a three to cut the lead to five with 18 seconds showing.
  • Two free throws by Jacob Works (Liverpool, N.Y.) regained the seven point advantage for Morrisville, a gap that was sufficient enough to stave off the Cardinals for the win.
  • Sanders finished with a team high 21 points, adding six rebounds, while Works chipped in 17 to go along with his two assists.
  • Avion Grainger (Syracuse, N.Y.) had 11 points and six assists on the afternoon, contributing three steals to the Mustang win, while McCullum collected nine points, hitting 7-of-8 free throws.
  • Yvan Fils-Aime (Dix Hills, N.Y.) added 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the double-double.

  • Morrisville returns to the court Tuesday, hosting Buffalo State in a 7:30 pm scheduled tip on the Mustangs home court.
