Morrisville women outgained by Elmira in season opener

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team suffered a 70-47 season opening setback to visiting Elmira College Saturday evening, as the visiting Soaring Eagles ran away with the contest in the third quarter.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting Elmira College women's basketball snagged a season opening 70-47 win over host SUNY Morrisville Saturday evening, outgaining the Mustangs 26-15 in the third quarter en route to the win.
  • Morrisville opened the contest strong, trailing 15-13 after the opening quarter before Elmira limited the hosts to just seven points in the second quarter to pick up the 30-20 lead at the break.
  • The Soaring Eagles shot nearly 43% from the floor in the third to open the gap 21 point lead after three, sealing the win in the fourth as they edged the Mustangs 14-12 in the final frame.
  • Freshman Gianna Washington (Liverpool, N.Y.) led Morrisville's efforts with 21 points in her collegiate debut, with another 13 points coming from Sophia Babcock (Oswego, N.Y.) off the bench.
  • Elmira dominated the glass over Morrisville, snagging a game total 63 rebounds to the Mustangs 26, including a 21-5 effort on the offensive glass.
  • Emma Ryan had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Elmira, with teammate Lauren Miller adding 15 points and three assists.
  • Amarionah Dixon collected a game best 22 rebounds, seven on the offensive glass, while chipping in nine points.
