Morrisville men withstand late Oneonta push for 90-85 SUNYAC win

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's basketball picked up their fourth SUNYAC win Friday night, withstanding a late Oneonta push, as the Mustangs collected the 90-85 victory on the road in Oneonta.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's basketball improved to 4-2 overall within SUNYAC play Friday night, as they topped host SUNY Oneonta 90-85 in league play on the road in Oneonta.
  • The Red Dragons poised a late comeback attempt, but the Mustangs were able to withstand the rally to earn the victory.
  • Yvan Fils-Aime (Dix Hills, N.Y.) led Morrisville with 18 points off the bench, draining three from beyond the arc, while adding five rebounds and two steals to his totals.
  • Three additional teammates posted double digits, including CJ McCullum (Bronx, N.Y.) who netted 14 to go along with three steals and a season high eight assists.
  • Senior Kareem Sanders (Schenectady, N.Y.) chipped in 13, while snagging six boards and assisting three, with teammate Chris Merilus (Nyack, N.Y.) rounded out the leaderboard with 11 points, blocking two and collecting four boards.
  • In a tightly matched opening half, both teams battled back and forth, exchanging one possession leads until a three from Jon Corl (Bridgeport, N.Y.) sparked a 14-2 Mustang run to open the gap to 11 with 1:30 remaining in the half.
  • Oneonta was able to close the deficit to seven, but Morrisville closed out the half with back-to-back scores to carry the 42-31 lead into the halftime break.
  • Oneonta chipped away at the Mustang lead in the second half, closing the gap to as little as four with 11:27 to go, but Morrisville put together a 6-0 spurt to regain the multiple possession lead.
  • After regaining the 10-point advantage with 37 seconds to go in the contest, Oneonta converted two free throws and followed with a three-pointer to make it a five-point game with 19-ticks remaining.
  • The Red Dragons sent Morrisville to the line in an attempt to pose the comeback, but the Mustangs hit five of eight free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
  • Morrisville turned the ball over a mere eight times in the contest, while forcing Oneonta into 19 miscues, converting those opportunities into 24 points.
  • The Mustang bench contributed 41 points to the league win, and dominated the paint 48-32, while outgaining Oneonta 13-8 on the offensive glass across the night.
  • Morrisville finished the night shooting 45.3% from the floor, including 43.8% from beyond the arc, recording a 51.4 shooting effort in the second half.
