Morrisville men battle to two goal draw with crosstown opponent Utica

UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit Saturday afternoon to cross town opponent, securing a two-goal draw with the Pioneers in non-league action in Utica.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's soccer scored twice in the second half of Saturday's crosstown action with host Utica University, recording a two-goal draw with the Pioneers in Utica.
  • The hosts put the first on the board at the 13:32 mark, placing the header just inside the left post for the early 1-0 lead.
  • They doubled their lead in the 25th minute with an unassisted tally, carrying the 2-0 advantage into the halftime period.
  • In the second half, Morrisville was pulled down in the box at the 53:07 mark and was awarded the penalty kick opportunity where Javier Duarte (New Rochelle, N.Y.) placed the ball to the right past Utica keeper for the first Mustang tally of the afternoon.
  • Morrisville, who had the momentum throughout the second half, persistently had a presence in the offensive end and was able to place the tying score into the back of the net with just over six minutes to go in regulation.
  • Pedro Oliveira (Baraga, Portugal) chipped the ball to an open Jesse Otu (Bronx, N.Y.) who in turn headed the ball into the center of the box.
  • The header found its way to the foot of Tariq Thompson (Hudson, N.Y.) for the one-timer, tying the game at two with his first collegiate score.
  • Utica had two chances down the stretch to regain the lead, but both shots sailed high of the goal and the game settled with a two-goal draw.
  • Caleb Lucero (Syracuse, N.Y.) recorded four saves in the tie for the Mustangs.

  • Morrisville returns to the field next Saturday, hosting SUNY Delhi in a 1 p.m. non-league match on the Mustangs home pitch.
