Bats roll as Mustangs charge ahead of Cobleskill for 12-8 NAC tourney win

BANGOR, ME – The fifth seeded SUNY Morrisville softball team picked up a post-season win Thursday morning as they downed fourth seed SUNY Cobleskill by a 12-8 final in the opening game of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship tournament hosted by Husson University in Bangor, Maine.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Fifth seeded SUNY Morrisville posted a 12-8 tournament opening win over fourth seeded SUNY Cobleskill Thursday morning, as the 2024 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championships began at top seeded Husson University in Bangor, Maine.
  • Cobleskill posted seven unanswered runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 8-5 lead heading into the top of the sixth, but the Mustangs responded with seven runs over the final two frames to claim the post-season win.
  • The Mustangs posted 18 hits across the contest, including a 3-for-4 plate performance from Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) who collected two RBI's and a run.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) and Abbie Platt (Oneonta, N.Y.) each went 3-for-5 with a double; Kaylor batting in four while Platt registered two RBI's and two
  • Sophie Keehle (Conklin, N.Y.) had a 2-for-4 presence at the plate, scoring three runs to contribute to the win, while Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) also collected two hits, including a triple off the fence, scoring one run.
  • Kaylor threw a complete game for the Mustangs, allowing seven earned runs and collecting two strikeouts in the win, improving her record on the mound to 9-10 overall.
  • After a scoreless first inning, Morrisville took the 2-0 lead in the top of the second with Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) singling through the left side to score Kaylor for the 1-0 advantage.
  • Two batters later, Platt shot a single to center field, driving in Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.) for the 2-0 inning lead.
  • Cobleskill got one back in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly, but the Mustangs countered with three more runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 5-1.
  • Brefka led off with a bunt before Lafontaine reached on a fielders choice.
  • Keehle shot a single to short to load the bases, before Brefka raced home to score on a wild pitch.
  • Platt recorded an RBI as she sent the fly out to left center, sending Lafontaine racing home, before Sawitzki smacked a double to left field to bat in Keehle for the 5-1 advantage.
  • Morrisville maintained the four-run advantage until the bottom of the fifth where Cobleskill posted seven unanswered runs, moving ahead 8-5.
  • In the top of the sixth, though, Keehle led off with a single down the left field line and Platt followed with a single, before Baldwin loaded the bases with a single down the right field line.
  • Sawitzki sent a single through the left side, sending Keehle home before Kaylor shot the double to left center and hit the top of the fence for the two-run hit that saw Platt and Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) cross home plate and pull the contest even at eight.
  • Gaskins, in her at bat, sent the sacrifice to left field and drove in Sawitzki for the go ahead run, 9-8.
  • Morrisville's defense forced a quick three out inning in the bottom of the sixth and headed into the top of the seventh with momentum that added three more to their total for the win.
  • With Keehle on first, Platt rifled the double to left to move the senior into scoring position, where two batters later a single from Kaylor up the middle scored both Keehle and Platt for the 11-8 advantage.
  • Gaskins followed with a double to right to bat in Molly Bobnick (Richfield Springs, N.Y.) who pitch ran for Sawitzki.
  • Cobleskill had a final attempt to rally in the bottom of the seventh but was only able to sneak one up the middle while the defense held strong and forced the quick inning for the 12-8 final.

  • Morrisville advanced with the win to face top seeded Husson University at 2 p.m.
