Morrisville men conclude season in NAC semis

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The second seeded SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse team wrapped up the 2024 season Saturday afternoon, falling in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinal action to third seeded SUNY Poly by a 12-9 final score on Drake Field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse team saw the season come to an end Saturday afternoon as they fell short in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinal round of the championship tournament by a 12-9 final to third seeded SUNY Poly.
  • Dean Mohammed (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led all scorers with five goals for the Mustangs, while senior Zach Nestor (Manlius, N.Y.) added a six-point effort with his one tally after assisting five others.
  • Dante Patriarco (Cortland, N.Y.) added two tallies to the Mustang efforts, while Chris Stancarone (Levittown, N.Y.) notched the final score.
  • Daniel Squires (Aquebogue, N.Y.) led the defensive efforts with his three caused turnovers, adding four ground balls to his tallies, while Justin Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y.) added five ground balls to go along with one caused turnover.
  • Nathan Weise (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded the loss despite a 15-stop effort, appearing in net for 51+ minutes of play, before Gabe Mathews (Sharon, Conn.) appeared for the final 8:42, turning aside one.
  • The first strike came off the stick of Poly less than a minute in, before Morrisville rattled off four straight with two each from Patriarco and Mohammed over a three minute span to put the second seeded Mustangs in front 4-1.
  • Poly added another before the end of the opening quarter to wrap up the scoring for the frame and send the game into the second with a 4-2 margin.
  • Nestor connected with Mohammed early in the second to broaden the lead to three, before Poly posted back-to-back scores, cutting the lead to one midway through the frame.
  • With time winding down in the second, Nestor connected with Mohammed for his fourth tally of the afternoon, giving the hosts the two-goal cushion at the break.
  • As with the start of the second, Poly collected two straight goals early in the third to pull the contest even at six, before Nestor again found Mohammed to put the Mustangs back in front, 7-6, with 10:23 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Wildcats were able to put together a four-goal run to claim a three-goal lead, holding Morrisville scoreless for nearly 19 minutes of action before a one-timer from Nestor to Stancarone broke the Mustangs scoring drought with 6:28 showing in the fourth.
  • After two from Poly in a minute's time, Nestor cut the lead to three with his unassisted goal at the 2:07 mark, but Morrisville was unable to chip away any closer as Poly advanced with the 12-9 win.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville concludes the season with an 8-8 overall mark. Nestor and Mohammed each earned selection to the All-Tournament team as announced by the League Office at Sunday's final.
