WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Third seeded SUNY Morrisville upended second seeded Husson University Saturday evening to claim their spot in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tournament finals, taking down the Eagles in thrilling overtime fashion as senior Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) posted the game winner 1:25 into the extra frame.
  • McDonald won the extra frame draw control and within a minute, Morrisville had their first look at net in the overtime period, but the free position was saved and Husson attempted a clear.
  • The clear was turned over within the offensive zone and the ground ball scooped up by senior Maddie Baum (Fulton, N.Y.) who found a wide-open McDonald for her 76th tally of the season, and the one to send the Mustangs to the tournament final.
  • Morrisville will play top seeded SUNY Canton tomorrow at 3 p.m. for the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
  • The opening quarter proved to be how the remainder of the contest would go for both teams, playing back-and-forth through the opening 15 before Morrisville found the lead 4-3.
  • Jazlyn Leet (Richford, N.Y.) notched the first tally of the night a mere 32 seconds in to give Morrisville the 1-0 lead, before Anyssia Ingersoll (Mexico, N.Y.) added an extra-woman tally at the 10:54 mark.
  • Husson put one on the board seconds later, but a second from Leet at 7:53 regained the two goal advantage for the Mustangs.
  • Again Husson would bring the contest within one within seconds, and added another with just over 5 remaining in the frame, but Ingersoll put the Mustangs back in front with her unassisted score with less than a minute showing on the clock.
  • McDonald posted her first of the night early in the second and collected back-to-back scores before Baum got in on the scoring to extend the Morrisville lead to four.
  • Husson would not go away, however, and rattled off three straight to cut the deficit to one.
  • Ingersoll collected her second of the day, on the extra woman, before McDonald posted the hat trick with her third tally with three ticks to go before the halftime period, for a 9-6 Morrisville lead.
  • The Mustangs struck twice in the opening minutes of the third to extend the lead to five with scores from Alexa Ringgold (Bellport, N.Y.) and Jillian Dodge (Jamesville, N.Y.).
  • After Husson added two, Ingersoll rattled off her 36th of the year after putting away the feed from Leet, maintaining a four-goal margin for the Mustangs.
  • Husson closed out the third with one score, before carrying the momentum into the fourth where they posted two within 23 seconds of one another to make it a one goal game with 14:02 remaining in the contest.
  • With 20 seconds to go, the Eagles posted the tying score and forced the overtime period, before McDonald sniped the game winner past the Husson keeper for the thrilling victory sending Morrisville to the Championship Final.
  • Both teams were evenly matched across the contest, with Husson holding the slight 18-11 advantage in draw controls.
  • McDonald finished with four goals, adding two draws and one caused turnover to her totals, while Ingersoll led with four goals and an assist, collecting eight draws and seven ground balls, also causing five turnovers.
  • Baum finished with one goal and three assists, collecting four ground balls and one caused turnover, while Leet had two goals and an assist to go along with her seven caused turnovers and six ground balls.
  • Jaele Naab (Clarence, N.Y.) had two caused turnovers in the defensive stance for the Mustangs.
  • Rebecca Thomas (Marcy, N.Y.) recorded the win in net, turning aside eight in 61:25. She also had four ground balls.
