Morrisville completes NAC sweep of Delhi with 5-2 win; takes nightcap 11-8

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team completed the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) series sweep of SUNY Delhi Wednesday afternoon, topping the visiting Broncos 5-2 in the first of the day's action, before rallying for a 11-8 nightcap win in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville completed the series sweep of visiting SUNY Delhi Wednesday afternoon, claiming the league win by a 5-2 final in the first of the day's action.
  • Delhi opened with a run in the top of the first before Morrisville crossed twice in the bottom of the second, reaching home once in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to take the win.
  • Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) rallied the Mustangs in the bottom of the second with her single down the left line, advancing on the throw, as bases became loaded for the hosts with back to back walks.
  • Jessica Budd (Fairport, N.Y.) shot a single to left field to score Baldwin, before a single from Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) batted in Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.).
  • Baldwin added a second run in the bottom of the third, before Sophie Keehle (Conklin, N.Y.) shot a single to right center to score Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.), putting the Mustangs ahead 4-1 after four innings of play.
  • Lafontaine reached on an error in the following inning, while seeing Molly Bobnick (Richfield Springs, N.Y.) score to put the Mustangs up 5-2 for the win.
  • Baldwin finished 3-for-4 for the Mustangs from the plate, while Sawitzki put together a 2-for-3 performance.
  • Brefka was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) registered six strikeouts on the mound for Morrisville in the win, allowing two earned runs in 34 batters faced.
  • Morrisville's win in the first lifted their overall league record to 9-3 to date on the season.
  • In the nightcap, a non-league match against the Broncos, Delhi led 8-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth, before a five run rally by the Mustangs gave them the 11-8 victory to boost their record to 13-14.
  • The Broncos collected four runs in the top of the first inning for the 4-0 gap, but Morrisville reached home three times to keep within striking distance.
  • A single from Keehle down the right field line and a stolen base positioned her in scoring position, where she reached home after a single from Sawitzki to left field.
  • A rifle sent to short stop by Kaylor an at bat later drove in Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.), before a walk by Heidi Allen (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) saw Sawitzki crossing the home plate for third Mustang run.
  • Delhi added three more runs to their total in the top of the second, and Morrisville countered in the bottom of the inning to maintain a one-run deficit fueled by a triple shot to center fence from Keehle that drove in Lafontaine.
  • Keehle stole home and Gaskins later scored on a Kaylor fly out, sending the Mustangs into the third trailing 7-6.
  • Delhi added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning, making it an 8-6 ballgame, but a hot bat continued in the bottom of the sixth for Keehle who ignited the Mustangs rally with her leadoff single.
  • Gaskins followed with a single shot to center field, before Baldwin stepped to the plate and blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence to put the Mustangs ahead 9-8.
  • Budd shot a single to center field to load the bases for the hosts, before a costly defensive error by the Broncos saw the Mustangs add one to their lead with a dead ball play.
  • Kaylie Kendrick (Johnson City, N.Y.) had a sac hit up center to score Bobnick, ending the inning with the Mustangs in front 11-8.
  • Delhi attempted to rally in the top of the seventh, but Morrisville's defense limited them to four total at bats.
  • Keehle finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate, scoring three and collecting one RBI.
  • Sawitzki added a 2-for-3 effort, while Baldwin and Gaskins each went 1-for-2.
  • Baldwin registered four RBI's, while throwing six innings to earn the win.
  • Kaylor finished the final inning, striking out two.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will wrap up the regular season NAC schedule with a three-game series on the road at Cobleskill beginning Friday with a double-header. Saturday's contest is a single game.
