Morrisville drops double to Keuka in non-conference play

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team took their home field for the first time in two seasons Tuesday afternoon, falling in double-header action to non-conference opponent Keuka College by final scores of 2-0 and 16-6.

THE BASICS:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville softball dropped double-header action to visiting Keuka College Tuesday evening, falling by final scores of 2-0 and 16-6 in their first home contest of the 2024 season.
  • Keuka jumped out in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but struggled to increase their lead until the top of the sixth adding one more for the 2-0 victory.
  • Keuka took the lead on a throwing error early on, before capitalizing on a double to score one in the sixth for the win.
  • Morrisville registered four hits on the day, with Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) leading the way at the plate with a 1-for-2 effort.
  • Sophie Keehle (Conklin, N.Y.), Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and Jessica Budd (Fairport, N.Y.) each went 1-for-3 in the Mustang efforts.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) collected the loss on the mound despite a five strikeout effort, allowing no earned runs in the contest in her 27 batters faced.
  • In the night cap, Morrisville held the 3-1 lead after the first, but a three inning second found Keuka in front by a run after two.
  • In the third, the hosts added three to their totals to reclaim the lead, but Keuka followed with five unanswered runs in the top of the fourth and extended their lead with six in the top of the seventh to claim the 16-6 victory.
  • Five Mustangs posted multiple hits in the contest, including Keehle who added a 3-for-4 effort with an RBI and runs scored.
  • Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.) added a 2-for-4 effort alongside Kaylor, each scoring once and Kaylor adding an RBI on her two double hits.
  • Hannah Brennan (Trumansburg, N.Y.) also went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Sawitzki put together a 2-for-3 effort with a run and RBI.
  • Baldwin threw the loss for Morrisville, recording one strikeout and six earned runs in 3.1 innings before being replaced by Gaskins for the final four innings of action.
  • Gaskins recorded three strikeouts.

  • Morrisville resumes league play Friday against SUNY Canton. Game time is currently scheduled for 4 p.m. in Morrisville.
