Seniors run wild in road win over Castleton

RUTLAND, VT. – The SUNY Morrisville women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the 2024 season Saturday afternoon, posting 11 unanswered goals in the second half as they handed host Vermont State Castleton a 21-9 non-conference loss in Rutland.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visting SUNY Morrisville women's lacrosse collected 11 unanswered goals in the second half to run away with a 21-9 non-conference win over host Vermont State Castleton Saturday afternoon in Rutland.
  • The Mustangs, who outshot the Spartans 45-24, had seven contribute to the scoring, including Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) who notched five tallies to go along with three assists.
  • Alexa Ringgold (Bellport, N.Y.) added a career high five goals and dished out two assists in the win, while fellow senior Maddie Baum (Fulton, N.Y.) collected a hat trick, while snagging six ground balls to add to her totals.
  • The three seniors notched six of their total 13 in the first half of action.
  • Anyssia Ingersoll (Mexico, N.Y.) posted a hat trick of her own alongside Jazlyn Leet (Richford, N.Y.), while Ingersoll led the Mustangs with eight draw control wins.
  • Leet added four caused turnovers to her totals, converting 1-of-3 free position opportunities.
  • Jillian Dodge (Jamesville, N.Y.) added a three-point outing, netting a goal and assisting two others, while Mikayla Zotta (Schenectady, N.Y.) rounded out the Mustang leaderboard with one goal.
  • Rebecca Thomas (Marcy, N.Y.) had five saves in the win in net.
  • Ringgold and Dodge opened the scoring for Morrisville with unassisted tallies within 40 seconds of one another before Baum posted her 10th of the season midway through the first quarter.
  • Ringgold collected her second at the 4:14 mark to double up the Mustang lead, before McDonald posted her first to give the visitors the 5-2 advantage after the opening quarter.
  • Castleton would cut the lead to one with back-to-back tallies, but Morrisville notched three straight to extend the gap to four midway through the second.
  • Both teams traded scores over the ensuing five minutes of action, before Morrisville headed into the break leading 10-6.
  • The Spartans brought the game within threat the 9:25 mark of the third, but Morrisville rattled off four straight unanswered and unassisted tallies, opening their advantage to six entering the final frame.
  • It was all Morrisville in the fourth as they finished off the game with a 6-0 run that included three on the extra woman for the 21-9 win.

  • Morrisville returns to the field Wednesday, traveling to Utica University for a 4 p.m. non-conference match.
