WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville softball team picked up a thrilling 11-10 win in the first of the day's action in Myrtle Beach Thursday afternoon, handing the Maine-Presque Isle Owls the non-conference loss in the bottom of the seventh after just two at bats.
  • Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.) led off the inning and sent a triple to the back of the fence to put the Mustangs in scoring position after just one at bat.
  • Sophie Keehle (Conklin, N.Y.) then stepped to the plate and shot the ball straight up the center of the field for an RBI single, scoring Brefka for the walk-off win.
  • Both teams battled back and forth throughout the contest, with Morrisville taking the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • With two on base, Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) singled as Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) crossed home after reaching base on balls.
  • UMPI took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third and maintained that lead until the Mustangs put together a three-run fourth inning that included a three-RBI home run shot by Keehle.
  • After UMPI tied the contest in the top of the fifth, they put together a six-run sixth inning to take the 10-4 lead, but Morrisville had the bats rolling in the bottom of the inning to pose a challenge for the Owls defense.
  • Brefka reached on a single, before Keehle registered a hit of her own to get on base.
  • A walk by Lafontaine loaded the bases, and on the ensuing at bat, Emery Sawitzki (Amsterdam, N.Y.) blasted a three-run triple to left field to bring the Mustangs within three runs with one out.
  • Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) registered an RBI after her single to score Sawitzki, before Baldwin kept the rally going with her single shot to score pitch runner Kailee Figger (New Berlin, N.Y.) and cut the lead to one.
  • An overthrown ball led to an unearned run by Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.), tying the contest at 10 after six complete innings.
  • UMPI placed a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh, but that's as close as they would get, before the Mustangs posted the walk-off win in the bottom of the inning.
  • Five Mustangs posted multiple hits in the contest, including Keehle who went 3-for-5 with four RBI's and two runs scored.
  • Kaylor added a 3-for-4 performance from the plate with an RBI, while Brefka also went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
