Morrisville's rally falls short in bottom of seventh

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team rallied to tie the contest at four runs in the top of the seventh, but opponent Notre Dame of Maryland University crossed the plate in the bottom of the inning to earn the 5-4 win in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday afternoon to tie the contest, but Notre Dame (MD) added one in the bottom of the inning to collect the 5-4 win in North Myrtle Beach during spring break play.
  • The Mustangs held Notre Dame scoreless until the bottom of the third when they crossed home on a wild pitch, adding two more runs in the inning for the 3-0 lead after three.
  • A fourth run in the bottom of the fifth set the Mustangs back 4-0 before a fielders choice by Piper Kaylor (Montgomery, N.Y.) with bases loaded sent Callie Lafontaine (Chaumont, N.Y.) home to rally the visitors and put Morrisville on the board.
  • Sophie Keehle (Conklin, N.Y.) added a run on the same play, scoring on an error, as the base runners advanced into scoring position.
  • Isabella Gaskins (Binghamton, N.Y.) sent a grounder to second to record an RBI, scoring Sara Brefka (East Syracuse, N.Y.), before Celeste Baldwin (Bainbridge, N.Y.) shot a single down the right field line to score pitch runner Hailey Allen (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and tie the game at four.
  • Notre Dame forced the third out and took the plate in the bottom of the inning, posting the walk off run on a Mustang error.
  • Keehle led the Mustangs at the plate as she went 2-for-3, while Brefka had a 2-for-4 effort.
  • Baldwin also went 2-for-4 on the day, recording an RBI.
  • Kaylor recorded the loss, allowing one earned run in the final 2.1 innings while registering three strikeouts.
  • Baldwin appeared in the first four, allowing three earned runs while recording a strike out.

  • Morrisville returns to the field tomorrow, taking on Kenyon College at 1, followed by a 5 p.m. night cap against Haskell Indian Nations University. Live video is available for both contests.
