Morrisville withstands late Cardinal rally, defeats Fisher 14-11

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Morrisville withstood a late St. John Fisher rally Saturday afternoon as they posted the 14-11 Empire 8 win, their second straight and fourth overall to date on the season, on the road in Rochester.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville football scored twice in the opening half to claim a 14-3 lead at the break and withstood a late host rally as they topped St. John Fisher 14-11 in Empire 8 action on the road to improve to 4-2 overall in league play.
  • The Mustangs, who edged the Cardinals 334 to 317 in total offense, held the slight edge in the running game, after playing even through the air on the afternoon.
  • Isaac Sylvain (Schenectady, N.Y.) collected 77 yards in 15 carries to lead the ball carriers for the Mustangs, with another 43 coming from quarterback Christopher Stancarone (Levittown, N.Y.).
  • Stancarone, who got the starting nod, completed 10-of-16 total passes for 198 yards and two touchdown scores, hitting senior tight end Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) six times for 129-yards and a score in front of Jarvis' hometown crowd.
  • Joe Chirurgi (Yonkers, N.Y.) added another 50 yards on two catches for a touchdown score, while Connor Marriott (Waterville, N.Y.) reined in one for 13 yards.
  • Aidan McDonald (Rochester, N.Y.) added to the Mustangs receiving game with one catch for six yards.
  • Morrisville's defense limited the hosts to 119-yards rushing on the afternoon, forcing a turnover, an interception by Cardinal quarterback Ryan Whitney.
  • Whitney, who completed 19-of-28 passes for 154 yards and a score added to his offensive totals with 27-yards rushing on 15 attempts, while back Peyton Nolan collected the other 92-net yards for the hosts.
  • Nate Goldrick was limited to 54-yards receiving on five catches, with the lone receiving touchdown score coming from Chase Vincenzi, who registered five for 49-yards.
  • Evan Salvaggio (Geneseo, N.Y.) led the Mustangs defensive unit with 13 stops, also breaking up two passes, while Scotty Howard (Binghamton, N.Y.) added another 12, registering a half tackle for a loss of two yards and a defended pass.
  • Dillon English (Webster, N.Y.) had a stellar afternoon for the Mustangs in front of his hometown crowd as well, collecting a total 11 tackles, including six solo.
  • David Kelley (Macedon, N.Y.), Camerin Camacho (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Eric Sparkman (Syracuse, N.Y.) each proved tough for the Cardinal offense, combining for five sacks.
  • Joe Miscia led the Fisher efforts with 13 tackles, collecting four for a loss of 10 yards.
  • Morrisville's first score of the afternoon came with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, as the Mustangs marched down field in seven plays to complete the 78-yard drive with a 39-yard strike from Stancarone to Chirurgi.
  • Stancarone threaded the needle to Chirurgi who split the defense before crossing the goal line.
  • Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) completed the point after to put the Mustangs up 7-0.
  • Morrisville added to its total midway through the second quarter, beginning the drive on their own 10-yard line, before Stancarone connected with Jarvis on the near sideline for the 39-yard scoring play.
  • The Mustangs completed the 90-yard drive in eight plays, consuming six minutes of time off the clock, before Jarvis had a four-yard gain on the defense and went into the endzone untouched for the touchdown.
  • Cole's point after put the Mustangs up 14-0 with minutes to go in the half.
  • St. John Fisher was able to put points on the board with one second showing before the half, with a 36-yard field goal from Kyle Farewell to make it a 14-3 ball game at the break.
  • After a scoreless third quarter, both teams battled back and forth and with the Cardinals threatening to score midway through, Morrisville's Josh Williams (Yonkers, N.Y.) picked off Whitney, stepping in front of the pass in the end zone to prevent the Cardinal score.
  • Fisher was able to hold Morrisville offensively before moving quickly with under two to go in the contest, registering their first touchdown of the day with 11 ticks remaining on the clock, a seven-yard pass from Whitney to Vincenzi in the back of the end zone to cut the lead to five.
  • The two-point conversion for the Cardinals was good, as Peyton Nolan dove for the left pylon to make it just a three-point visitor lead.
  • St. John Fisher attempted the on-sides kick, but a recovery by Omar Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) for the Mustangs on the Cardinal 46 sealed the win for Morrisville with Stancarone kneeling for the final play of the day.

  • Morrisville returns to the field for one more regular season contest next Saturday, hosting Hartwick College at 12 p.m. for the finale, and senior day celebrations.
