Mustangs fall in Empire 8 opener to no. 2 Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville football team fell in the 2024 Empire 8 league opener Saturday afternoon on the road at no. 2 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland, by a 41-0 final score in Cortland.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville was held scoreless Saturday afternoon, dropping their Empire 8 opener on the road at no. 2 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland by a 41-0 final score.
  • Cortland held a 7-0 lead after the opening quarter, extending it to 17-0 at the break, before posting two scores each in the third and fourth frames for the win.
  • The Red Dragons limited Morrisville to 70-net yards on the ground and 198-yards total offense, while continuing their offensive dominance with 488-yrads total offense.
  • Alek Britton completed 12-of-28 passes for 128 yards, three to senior tight end Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) who had a team high 31 yards.
  • Aidan McDonald (Rochester, N.Y.) added three receptions for 29 yards, alongside one for Ed-Son Jean-Baptiste (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for 29-yards.
  • Sean Perrin (Wallkill, N.Y.) had 49-net yards on 13 attempts on the ground.
  • Eric Sparkman (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Evan Salvaggio (Geneseo, N.Y.) each posted 10 stops for Morrisville in their defensive efforts, Sparkman adding a half tackle for a loss of two yards.
  • Camerin Camacho (Cape Coral, Fla.) added nine along with a forced fumble.
  • Scotty Howard (Binghamton, N.Y.) recorded a fumble and forced another, as the Mustangs defense forced one Red Dragon turnover.
  • Zac Boyes connected on 20-of-31 passes for 229 yards and three touchdown scores, hitting AlfanoStJohn eight times for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Ethan Gallo led all ball carriers with 126 net yards on 22 carries, while Boyes added 41 and a score, alongside Tyson Taylor who posted 60 yards and a touchdown.
  • Jaden Martinez had 11 stops for the hosts, with Jack Winey adding 10.
  • Morrisville's defense held Cortland scoreless until their second drive of the contest, capping off the nine-play, 68-yard drive with a 24-yard Taylor rush up center for the score.
  • The hosts extended the lead early in the second quarter with a 36-yard field goal from Mike Baloga, before Boyes hit Zeva on the ensuing drive in the back left corner of the endzone for the touchdown score and 17-0 lead.
  • Cortland had the first possession of the second half, and after driving down to the Morrisville 33-yard line coughed up the ball as Howard forced the fumble and fell on the loose ball, giving the visitors their first possession of the second half.
  • Morrisville put together a 47-yard drive down to the Cortland 21 and opted to kick a field goal on fourth down, but the ball hit the right upright, keeping the visitors off the board.
  • Cortland capitalized on the ensuing possession, AlfanoStJohn reining in the 20-yard scoring strike from Boyes.
  • The Red Dragons regained the ball on the kick-off after forcing the Mustang fumble, expanding their lead to 31-0 with a Boyes 17-yard rushing score.
  • Cortland added a 32-yard field goal early in the fourth, extending the lead to 41-0 with their final score of the afternoon, a 24-yard pass play from Boyes to AlfanoStJohn midway through the frame.
  • Morrisville's longest drive of the afternoon came on their final push, moving the ball from their own 15-yard line to the Cortland two, but the Red Dragons defense backed up the Mustangs on fourth down, forcing the turnover on downs.
