Mustangs unable to stop no. 9 Cortland in second quarter

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville field hockey team held nationally ranked SUNY Cortland scoreless for one quarter of Saturday's action, before the Red Dragons found the back of the boards and opened up the contest en route to a 11-0 SUNYAC win in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville field hockey was able to hold visiting nationally ranked SUNY Cortland scoreless in the opening quarter of Saturday's league action, before the Red Dragons rattled off seven second period tallies en route to the 11-0 SUNYAC win on Drake Field in Morrisville.
  • Cortland, no. 9 ranked by the latest NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll, outshot the Mustangs 14-0 in the opening quarter, but Morrisville goalkeeper Emmaly Noeller (Canastota, N.Y.) turned away seven to keep the Red Dragons scoreless after one.
  • It wasn't until the 18:10 mark of the second quarter that the visitors were able to put their first of the day on the scoreboard, adding six straight over eight minutes time to open the gap to a 7-0 advantage at the break.
  • Noeller added five more saves in the frame, while Michaela Iza (West Babylon, N.Y.) contributed a defensive save to the Mustangs efforts.
  • Cortland added two goals apiece in the third and fourth quarters to broaden the gap, but not without Jillian Bonczjowski (Rome, N.Y.) adding eight saves.
  • Morrisville was able to draw three penalty corners against the Red Dragons, and placed four shots on goal, one stopped by Emma Morgan who recorded the win.
  • Sofia Cannistraci had three in the second half of play for Cortland.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville heads to Keuka College on Tuesday for a non-league match with the Wolves, before resuming SUNYAC play on the 11th against Oneonta.
