Morrisville men stun Cortland with come-from-behind win

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's ice hockey team stunned visiting SUNY Cortland Wednesday night, netting two third period scores in the come-from-behind 2-1 win in SUNYAC action in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville netted a thrilling 2-1 win over visiting SUNY Cortland Wednesday night in Morrisville, scoring twice in the third period to stun the visiting Red Dragons for the SUNYAC victory.
  • After a scoreless first, Cortland broke through the Mustang defense with a power play tally at 9:10 of the second to put the first tally on the board, but couldn't muster another as Garrett Boyonoski (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) had a tough 29 save front through the first 40 minutes of play.
  • Stevie Gerbis (Bradenton, Fla.) evened the contest at one for the Mustangs with his fifth score of the season, netting the tally off the breakaway dish from Cameron Clark (Daytona Beach, Fla.) 1:13 into the final frame.
  • Matteo DiBlasio (Toronto, Ont.) was credited with the second assist after clearing the puck to a wide-open Clark on the right wing.
  • Clark dished it to the left, finding Gerbis all alone on the wing for the scoring wrister.
  • Late in the third, Morrisville's Brett Tibbs (Mt. Airy, Md.) chased down the loose puck behind the net, chipping it to Chris Mott (Nesconset, N.Y.) who found Jacob Black (Fergus, Ont.) for the cut down the center of the zone.
  • Black one-timed the puck over the right pad of Cortland's netminder for the go ahead score with 3:17 to go in the contest.
  • Morrisville's defense fought off a persistent Cortland attack over the next two minutes, and with 1:18 to go, the Red Dragons attempted to even the score with the extra skater after pulling Ronan Mobley from net.
  • Boyonoski made three huge stops for the Mustangs in the closing minute of play, securing the league win for the hosts.
  • Boyonoski finished with 41 saves on the night in the victory.
  • Mobley registered 16 in the loss.

  • Morrisville returns to the ice Saturday, traveling to Oswego for a 7 p.m. puck drop in SUNYAC play.
