Morrisville men run past Canton, 19-5

CANTON, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse exploded for eight first quarter tallies as they set back Canton early and often en route to a 19-5 non-league win on the Roos home turf in Canton Wednesday afternoon.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Canton posted the first score of the non-league affair Wednesday afternoon, but the Mustangs put together an 11 goal run that carried into the second as they set back the host Roos 19-5 come final whistle in Canton.
  • Luke Strong (Rochester, N.Y.) and Dean Mohammed (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) each posted four scores to lead the Mustangs, while Mohammed added an assist for the five point outing.
  • Evan Kistner (Fulton, N.Y.) had a five point game for Morrisville, netting the hat trick while assisting two others, with fellow attackman Daniel Squires (Aquebogue, N.Y.) registered his first collegiate hat trick with his three tallies.
  • Curtis Robitaille (Endwell, N.Y.) notched two tallies and dished out another, with Chris Picciott (Brewerton, N.Y.) adding one each to the Mustangs scoring.
  • James Graizzaro (Hillside, N.J.) and Dante Patriarco (Cortland, N.Y.) collected one apiece to round out Morrisville scoring.
  • Dylan Laplace (Chester, Conn.) registered the win with nine stops between the pipes in three quarters of action, before Nathan Weise (Rochester, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut in the final quarter, recording four saves.
  • Canton struggled in their offensive zone, getting just 23 shots, while meeting long sticks Zack Mabry (Suffern, N.Y.) and Kyle Farrell (Holtsville, N.Y.) who combined for six takeaways and 16 ground balls.
  • Mabry caused five turnovers and collected a team high nine ground balls.
  • Michael Avgenikos (Cazenovia, N.Y.) won 14-of-22 faceoffs at the center start, collecting eight ground balls.
  • Canton notched their lone score of the first quarter at the 12:34 mark for a 1-0 lead, but the tables quickly turned in favor of the visiting Mustangs as Strong buried his third of the season less than a minute later to tie the contest at one.
  • Within a minute, Morrisville took the one goal lead with Kistner connecting with Picciott for the go ahead score, before Morrisville netted three additional scores within two minutes time to open the lead to four, adding another three before the end of the quarter for a commanding 8-1 advantage.
  • Mohammed added two during the run, with another two coming off the stick of Strong.
  • Morrisville continued their scoring run into the second to claim an 11-1 lead, before wrapping up the opening half with a final first half strike, the second of the frame, from Kistner.
  • With a 12-2 lead, Morrisville continued to put pressure on the Roo defense, and notched three more scores in the third, including two from Mohammed, for the 15-3 advantage.
  • Morrisville notched four more scores in the fourth, putting the game out of reach for the hosts, as they collected the non-conference road win.
  • Morrisville outshot Canton 34-17 in shots on goal and forced Canton into 22 unsuccessful clears on the afternoon.
  • The Mustangs won the battle on the ground, snagging 55 ground balls to Canton's 44.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will head to Oswego Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest, returning home on the 18th to host Potsdam.
