Game Recap: Lacrosse (W) |

Morrisville women stumble in season opener, fall to Hartwick 18-8

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's lacrosse team faced a delay to the start of their season and was able to take the field for the first time in 2023 on the road at Hartwick, suffering an 18-8 loss to the host Hawks in Oneonta Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 8, Hartwick 18 (halftime: Hartwick 8-1)
  • Location: Wright Stadium, Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 0-1, Hartwick 1-0

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville opened the 2023 season Wednesday afternoon on the road at Hartwick College, suffering an 18-8 defeat, despite a second half comeback attempt in Oneonta.
  • Jaele Naab (Buffalo, N.Y.) was the first to put one in the back of the net for the Mustang squad, pulling the game even at one midway through the opening quarter after a Hartwick score a minute earlier.
  • Naab's tally is all the Mustangs would get in the first half, though, as the Hawks took the 8-1 lead into the halftime break after netting four in the first and second quarters of action.
  • Hartwick quickly added two in the opening minutes of the third for the nine goal lead, but a tally from Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) broke up the scoring run and gave the visitors their second goal of the contest.
  • Morrisville fell behind by 10 in the minutes that followed but a costly clearing mistake by the hosts gave the Mustangs another score, leading to a second about 30 seconds later off the stick of Maddie Baum (Fulton, N.Y.) who received the connection from Naab.
  • Morrisville again fought a 10-goal deficit with two straight tallies, a second from McDonald with 28 ticks to go in the third, followed by one from Alexa Ringgold (Bellport, N.Y.), her first of the season just over a minute later off the dish from McDonald.
  • Ringgold added a second tally at the 11:08 mark of the fourth, before Sara Lutz (Parker, Colo.) wrapped up all scoring for the Mustangs with her unassisted tally with 1:21 to go.
  • Rebecca Thomas (Whitesboro, N.Y.) turned away 20 in the loss in net for the Mustangs, 13 that came in the second half of play.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville returns to the field Sunday, hosting Medaille College at 2 p.m. in Morrisville – a contest that has been rescheduled from Saturday with the anticipated approaching winter weather.
