Slow start sets Morrisville women back against Medaille

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's lacrosse team suffered a 16-8 set back to visiting Medaille College Sunday afternoon, falling behind in the first half as they were unable to recover in the non-league loss on Drake Field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville opened the 2023 home slate Sunday afternoon, hosting visiting Medaille College on Drake Field, but fell behind early as they dropped the 16-8 non-league decision to the Mavericks.
  • Morrisville trailed 4-1 after the opening quarter before Medaille added five more scores in the second to add to their total for a 9-2 halftime lead.
  • Morrisville battled back in the third with a four-goal quarter, but the deficit proved too much as Medaille posted the 16-8 victory.
  • Sarah Lutz (Parker, Colo.) led the Mustangs with a hat trick, netting three total goals, while teammate Aria Treadway (Rome, N.Y.) collected six points behind her two goals and four assists.
  • Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) added one of her own to go along with two assists, while Maddie Baum (Fulton, N.Y.) posted one each.
  • Alexa Ringgold (Bellport, N.Y.) rounded out scoring for the Mustangs with one goal, while causing a team high three turnovers and picking up four ground balls.
  • Rebecca Thomas (Marcy, N.Y.) recorded 11 stops in the loss in net for Morrisville.
  • Medaille opened with two quick strikes for an early 2-0 lead before a score midway through the quarter from McDonald made it a 2-1 game.
  • After netting two for the 4-1 quarter advantage, Treadway cut the deficit in half with her put away off the dish from Baum at the 10:37 mark of the second quarter.
  • Medaille, however, rattled off five straight for the 9-2 lead at the break.
  • Morrisville rallied out of the gates in the third with back-to-back tallies a mere 11 ticks apart, the first from Baum, before Lutz added one of her own.
  • Both scores were off the feed from Treadway.
  • Midway through the frame, Treadway connected with Ringgold for one, before adding one of her own at the 2:17 mark off the pass from McDonald to send the game into the fourth with a 12-6 Medaille lead.
  • Lutz quickly added one for Morrisville just over a minute in off the pass in from Treadway, but Medaille rattled off four straight to set back the Mustangs nine.
  • Lutz added a final tally for the Mustangs with 1:49 to go, as McDonald picked up the assist.

  • Morrisville returns to the field Thursday, hosting Oswego in a rescheduled match from last week. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Morrisville.
