Hammersley, Walker, Doorley power Morrisville women to league win

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Junior Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.), sophomore Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) and freshman Tayghan Doorley (Hornell, N.Y.) combined for 57 points Saturday afternoon to power host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team past visiting Penn St. Harrisburg in a big 79-68 United East battle in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville had three combine for 57 of the team's total 78 points Saturday afternoon as they powered past visiting Penn St. Harrisburg in United East play, earning the 78-69 league win to move to the top of the conference standings.
  • Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) led all scorers with 27 points on the day, adding seven boards, as she had a near perfect shooting game behind her 8-for-9 effort from the floor and 10-for-12 effort from the free throw line.
  • Twelve of her game total 27 came in the third quarter of play.
  • Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) added 20 points, completing the double-double with 11 boards, also registering three assists and two steals.
  • Tayghan Doorley (Hornell, N.Y.) added 10 to go along with her four rebounds, nailing 3-of-5 from behind the arc in the win.
  • Both teams battled back and forth through the opening half, with the Mustangs holding the slight 37-29 lead at the halftime break.
  • Morrisville extended their lead to 11 after three quarters in, utilizing the finesse of Hammersley in the paint.
  • Hammersley opened the scoring for the Mustangs in the third with her attack in the paint and followed with a second moments later on the back door cut, getting sent to the line to complete the three-point play.
  • The junior struck again midway for a third straight bucket to maintain the double digit lead, but a three by Harrisburg, followed by a free throw found the Nittany Lions trailing by six with five to go in the quarter.
  • Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) hit a big three from the baseline before Hammersley drained one from the top of the key to extend the lead to 12, closing out the half with three more points by the junior forward for the 53-42 lead after three.
  • Morrisville extended their lead to as many as 15 in the final quarter, before the visitors chipped away to cut the deficit to seven with 2:19 to go, but a huge three by Doorley from the right wing regained the double-digit lead for the hosts.
  • Harrisburg took to the inside game in the final two minutes of play and forced the Mustangs to earn the win from the free throw line, where they completed 12-of-14, including 9-of-10 from Walker.
  • Morrisville hit 25-of-33 total attempts from the line across the afternoon, drained eight three-pointers and shot 54.8% from the floor.
  • They limited the Nittany Lions to a 34.8% effort from the floor, while registering 18 points off Harrisburg miscues.

  • Morrisville will return to the court Wednesday, traveling to Penn St. Berks for a league match that is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
  • Prior to the contest, Morrisville honored its graduating class, seniors Colone-Microni, Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) and Walker.
