Walker's double-double leads to sweep of St. Mary's for Morrisville women

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – SUNY Morrisville sophomore Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) collected her 13th double-double of the season Friday evening, registering 24 points and grabbing 16 rebounds to lead the visiting Mustangs to the series sweep of St. Mary's College of Maryland by a 57-47 final score in St. Mary's City, Maryland.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville women's basketball moved into the top spot in league standings Friday evening as they swept a tough St. Mary's College (Md.) squad by a 57-47 United East final in St. Mary's City.
  • Morrisville, who boasts a 13-2 overall United East record, was led by sophomore guard Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) who collected her 13th double-double on the season behind a Mustang high 24 points and 16 rebounds.
  • Walker also added two assists and two blocks to her totals, while shooting 14-for-15 from the free throw line on the night.
  • Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) contributed to the Mustang leaderboard, netting 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds, while Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) added 10 to go along with her two steals and one assist.
  • Morrisville got off to a slow start in the first quarter and was set back early, trailing 11-21 after one.
  • After an early jumper by the Seahawks leading scorer Karon Williams, Morrisville went on a 13-0 run to erase the double-digit lead and go ahead by one with four minutes remaining before the half.
  • St. Mary's jumped back out in front with back-to-back scores, but a jumper by Vieira with under a minute showing sent the Mustangs into the locker room trailing 26-27.
  • St. Mary's collected the first bucket of the second half, but for every score they put up Morrisville countered with one of their own, before taking over the lead with an 8-3 run to close out the quarter with the four-point advantage.
  • The Seahawks tied the contest at 41 all with 7:29 to play, before Walker went to work, completing a three-point play that saw the sophomore erupt for nine straight points and a 50-41 Mustang lead.
  • Samantha Blaylock nailed back-to-back three's for St. Mary's to cut the lead to three with just over one minute to go in the contest, but Walker once again made her way to the free throw line where she added five more points, extended the Mustang lead to eight.
  • Hammersley closed out the scoring with two more from the charity stripe for Morrisville with 17 ticks to go, securing the 57-47 win and series sweep of the Seahawks.
  • Morrisville outgained St. Mary's in action in the paint, 24-16, and capitalized on turnovers, adding 11 points to their totals on the contest, while controlling the glass 52-42 across four quarters of action.
  • The Mustangs converted a game total 19-of-23 from the free throw line on the night.

  • Morrisville will meet Gallaudet in the regular season finale tomorrow on the Bison's home court in Washington, D.C. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Gallaudet.
