Morrisville football suffers heartbreaking loss to Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville football team suffered a heartbreaking 14-10 loss Saturday afternoon to host Alfred University, despite a late contest push in Alfred.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visting SUNY Morrisville football suffered a heartbreaking 14-10 setback Saturday afternoon on the road in Alfred, falling in their second Empire 8 contest this season.
  • The Mustangs led 10-7 at the half before the hosts put a score on the board in the third, before making a late game push in the comeback attempt.
  • Morrisville found the end zone for the go ahead score with under two minutes to go in the contest, but the touchdown was subsequently waived off for a penalty at the line of scrimmage and the Mustangs were unable to overcome the setback, falling in league play.
  • Morrisville outgained the hosts in total offensive yards, 333 to 254 on the day, including a 259-yard gain through the air.
  • Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.) connected with tight end Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) for 101 yards on eight receptions, adding another 96 to wide receiver Jarrell Chaney (Albany, N.Y.) who pulled in seven on the afternoon.
  • Frerichs completed 25-of-39 passes for 259 yards.
  • Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Mustang efforts on the ground, posting 38 net yards rushing on eight carries, while Frerichs added a net eight for the lone touchdown score.
  • Evan Salvaggio (Geneseo, N.Y.) led the defensive efforts with 13 stops, seven solo tackles, while Darrius Fulton (Rochester, N.Y.) added an 11 tackle effort, eight solo.
  • Omar Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) posted a second interception of the season to go along with his six tackles, the interception coming in the fourth to regain possession for the visitors.
  • Morrisville marched downfield on their first possession of the game, putting together the 11-play, 84-yard scoring drive out of the gates.
  • Frerichs immediately went to work with his favored receiving unit, hitting Jarvis for a 22 yard gain, before targeting Chaney to move the ball 14 yards forward.
  • Following two straight carries on the ground, Frerichs connected a second time with Jarvis for a 13-yard gain down to the Alfred 10, before finishing off the drive with a four-yard rushing score.
  • Morrisville forced a quick three-and-out on the ensuing Alfred possession, but quickly returned the ball to the Saxon's hands as they fumbled.
  • The Mustang defense, though, forced Alfred to line up for a 33-yard field goal attempt, which sailed wide right.
  • Alfred pulled the game even at seven early in the second quarter with a 42-yard strike and scramble from Chris Kelly to Dion Anderson.
  • Morrisville countered minutes before half with a 31-yard field goal from Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) to carry the 10-7 lead into the break.
  • Alfred's go ahead score came late in the third, utilizing Max Freeman to move the ball forward on four straight plays for 49 yards, before Kelly capped off the nine play, 63-yard drive with the two-yard scramble over the goal line.
  • Morrisville made a last drive effort late in the quarter to post the go ahead score but were turned away as Alfred posted the win.
  • Kelly finished 10-for-21 for 86 yards and a score for Alfred, while Freeman posted 129 yards on the ground on 22 attempts.
  • Anderson led the Saxon receiving unit with 72 yards and a score.
  • Joe Copp led the defensive efforts with 13 tackles, recovering the forced fumble in the second.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will return to the field next Saturday, traveling to Utica University. The Pioneers suffered a 56-3 loss to Cortland in the day's action.
