WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville battled back from a two-period one goal deficit Friday afternoon to force extra time, but fell short as Cortland posted the game winner in the overtime period to collect the 2-1 NEWHL victory on the Mustangs home ice in Morrisville.
  • Cortland took the 1-0 lead midway through the opening period as they lifted the puck over the glove of Morrisville netminder Maggie Jones (Marystown, N.L.) for the lead at the 9:14 mark.
  • Morrisville held the Red Dragons scoreless through the second period and entered the third trailing by one, before posting the equalizer at the 5:35 mark as Emily Olson (Lloydminster, Alta.) put away the rebound off the initial shot by Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.).
  • Kate Mabey (Guelph, Ont.) was credited with the second assist after clearing the puck to McDonald in the neutral zone.
  • Cortland had the chance to take the late lead with a three-man push against the Mustangs defense, but a cross crease slide by Jones led to back-to-back stops and forced the extra time.
  • The visitors-controlled possession from the opening faceoff, and Jones turned away three attempts before Ainsley Delacourt found the back of the net from the center of the offensive zone to hand the hosts the heartbreaking loss.
  • Jones finished with 32 stops for the Mustangs in the loss, including 12 in the third period.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville returns to the ice tomorrow at Cortland for a 3 p.m. NEWHL battle.
