MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Four collected double digits Friday night to lead the host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team to a 83-68 win over visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland in United East play, picking up their second straight win of the new year.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 83, St. Mary's 68 (halftime: Morrisville 48-31)
  • Location: STUAC Gymnasium, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 6-5, 2-0 United East; St. Mary's 5-5, 1-1 United East

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Four posted double figures Friday evening to lead the host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team to a league victory over visiting St. Mary's, including Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) who paced the hosts with her game high 23 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
  • Walker added five assists to her double-double performance, shooting a near perfect 8-10 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
  • Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) added a double-double for the Mustangs for her fourth of the season, posting 17 points and snagging 11 boards, while teammate Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) notched 17 to go along with her two assists.
  • Tayghan Doorley (Hornell, N.Y.) came off the bench to contribute 12, a season high for the freshman.
  • After leading 48-31 at the break, St. Mary's made a comeback attempt in the third outgaining the Mustangs 27-17 to send the game into the fourth frame with a seven-point host advantage.
  • Morrisville, who took advantage of their speed in the transition, was able to increase their lead early on to double-digits, netting back-to-back fast break layup sin the paint before Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) threw down the three-ball from the top of the key for the 16-point host lead midway through.
  • Following a jumper by the Seahawks to cut the lead to 14, Morrisville went 6-for-6 from the free throw line to increase the lead to 20 with two minutes to play, widening the gap and making it impossible for St. Mary's to stage a comeback.
  • Morrisville dominated play in the paint, outgaining St. Mary's 38-10, including 12 fast break points and 10 that came on second chance opportunities.
  • The Mustangs shot a season best 85.7% from the free throw line, hitting 18-of-21 attempts across the contest.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville returns to the court tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Gallaudet University in a rematch of last year's United East Championship final.
