St. Mary's edge men in second half for win

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland edged host Morrisville men's basketball by three points in the second half, enough to sneak by the Mustangs for a 71-67 United East win on the Mustangs home court in Morrisville Friday night.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting St. Mary's College outgained Morrisville 44-41 in the second half of Friday night's United East matchup in Morrisville, earning the 71-67 league win as they shot 57.14% from the floor in the second period of play.
  • Morrisville, who trailed 27-26 at the half, held a slim two-point lead with 3:05 remaining on the clock, but a persistent St. Mary's squad was able to pull even at the free throw line with just over a minute to go, and took the lead for good with 27 ticks remaining en route to the win.
  • Morrisville had two chances in the paint to take the lead with 40 seconds to go but couldn't connect as St. Mary's capitalized on their ensuing offensive possession for the two-point lead.
  • They were able to add to their total with two from the charity stripe with three seconds showing on the clock, securing the win as Morrisville dropped the 71-67 league affair.
  • Shykell Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with 17 points on the night, hitting 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, while adding four rebounds to his totals.
  • Jordan Coard (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Tron Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each added a double-digit performance, Coard netting 15 to go along with seven boards and Smith 14 to go along with his six assists.
  • Morrisville shot 45.6% from the floor across the contest.
