Morrisville women complete weekend sweep with upset of Canton

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – SUNY Morrisville women's hockey celebrated senior day in the best possible way Saturday afternoon, completing the weekend sweep with a 5-2 upset victory over visiting SUNY Canton on the Mustangs home ice in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville women's hockey collected their second straight win as they stunned visiting SUNY Canton with a 5-2 final on the Mustangs home ice, pulling off the NEWHL upset on Senior Day in Morrisville.
  • Canton took a 1-0 lead nearly eight minutes into the opening period with the Jayme McIlveen tally.
  • Senior Rhys Brown (Kemptville, Ont.) responded with the equalizer at the 15:27 mark with her backhanded top shelf flick, skating in off the right wing along the crease after the tip from Allie Davidson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) in the neutral zone.
  • Just over a minute later, Davidson collected one of her own, cleaning up the loose puck off the initial shot from Lilly Trevors (Miramichi, N.B.).
  • Pippy Pritchard (Saskatoon, Sask.) was also credited with an assist on the tally that came at the 17:32 mark to give the Mustangs the 2-1 edge after the first.
  • After skating through most of the second with the one goal lead, Brown collected her second of the afternoon at 17:54 in the period, poking in the loose puck off the pads of Canton's netminder on the crease after the mid-ice heave from Davidson.
  • Morrisville, who held the 3-1 lead after two, got two quick tallies in the sixth minute of the final frame to expand their advantage to four.
  • Alana McDonald (Potsdam, N.Y.) skated down the center of the offensive zone between two Roo defensemen and with the wrister found the back of the net at the 6:06 mark, before a backhanded rebound clean up in front of net by Easson 49 ticks later saw the Mustangs out in front by four.
  • Pritchard picked up her second assist of the day on Easson's score, placing the initial shot on net for the Mustangs.
  • Canton got one back in the closing seconds of the contest, but it was too late as they ran out of clock.
  • The Roos had difficulty throughout the contest in getting past Morrisville netminder Maggie Jones (Marystown, N.L.) who stood on her head to post a career high 52 saves for the win.
  • Twenty-two of her game total came in the final period of play

  • Morrisville will face Potsdam next Friday, looking to make it three straight in NEWHL play. The puck is scheduled to drop at 1 p.m. in Morrisville.
