WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville football opened the 2022 season Saturday on their home field with a shut out victory, claiming a 10-0 win over former NJAC opponent Kean University, in Morrisville.
  • The Mustangs defensive unit came up big for the hosts, limiting the visitors to just 253 yards total offense on the day, while keeping the Cougars out of the endzone.
  • Morrisville outgained Kean 160 to 136 yards in the running game, edging the Cougars in total offense as they compiled 271 on the day.
  • Signal caller Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.) went 10-for-22 for 111 yards passing on the afternoon, hitting lead receiver Justin Adams (West Babylon, N.Y.) three times for a total of 55 yards and a touchdown score.
  • Frerichs added 61 net yards rushing as well, while Joey Chirurgi (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added another 92 combined.
  • Defensively, the Mustangs limited Kean's Robbie Nungesser to just 117 yards passing, while allowing a mere 136 in the running game.
  • Joe Miller-LaBar (Lansing, N.Y.) led the Mustangs defensive efforts with eight total stops, including a half tackle for a loss of two yards. He also registered a pass break up.
  • Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) added another seven, posting a sack, while teammates Darrius Fulton (Rochester, N.Y.) and Dante McGowan (Rochester, N.Y.) each collected six.
  • McGowan also had two pass break ups.
  • Playing through a scoreless first quarter of action, Kean was threatening to put numbers on the board first, but the Mustangs defense established the tone for the remainder of the contest with a Will Brown (Amherst, N.Y.) fourth down sack to return possession to the hosts.
  • On the ensuing Morrisville possession, the Mustangs were quick to move the ball, taking advantage of short strikes to the receiving unit, before Frerichs hit a wide open Adams deep in the middle of the field for a 39-yard scoring touchdown, and 6-0 Mustang lead.
  • Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) completed the point after.
  • Again Kean put together a drive that landed the Cougars within Mustang territory, but Miller-LaBar stood Donte Jamison up at the line to force the turnover on downs.
  • Morrisville went into the locker room leading 7-0 after two, and out of the gates, forced Kean to punt the ball away.
  • On the ensuing Cougar drive, Kean took advantage of the quick foot of Jamison to drive into the Mustangs red zone, and as they looked to connect in the back right corner to a receiver, Morrisville's Josh Williams (Yonkers, N.Y.) stepped in front of the ball for the interception, leading to a 35-yard field goal for the hosts on the ensuing drive, and 10-0 lead.
  • A last quarter effort by Kean was stopped short, as the Mustangs Justin Anderson (Jamaica, N.Y.) forced Nungesser to scramble for an incomplete pass, and Miller-LaBar recorded a second pass break up to force the turnover on downs.
