Mustangs cage Bengals in 31-10 win; remain undefeated at 4-0

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Visiting SUNY Morrisville football tossed their fourth straight win of the season Saturday evening as they topped host Buffalo State College by a 31-10 non-conference final in Buffalo.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville upped their overall record to 4-0 Saturday evening as they toppled host Buffalo State College by a 31-10 final tally in non-conference action on Coyer Field in Buffalo.
  • Morrisville, who kept the Bengals scoreless until the fourth quarter, put together a team effort on both sides of the ball in the win, with the offensive unit gaining 385 yards to Buffalo State's 284 total offense.
  • Junior quarterback Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.) completed a season best 19-of-25 passes for 248 yards and four touchdown scores, while adding a team high 52 yards in the running game on 11 carries.
  • Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 41 yards on his 12 attempts.
  • Wide receiver Joey Chirurgi (Yonkers, N.Y.) was a big target for Frerichs, reining in five for a total 73 yards receiving, while tight end Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) seized four for 60 yards and a touchdown score.
  • Justin Adams (West Babylon, N.Y.) added one for 44 yards, and Connor Marriott (Waterville, N.Y.) two for 24 yards.
  • Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) led the defensive unit with 12 total stops, adding 1.5 tackles for a loss of five yards, while Omar Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) made six stops.
  • On the opening possession for the Bengals, Buffalo put together a 64-yard drive, lining up for a 29-yard field goal attempt, but the kick was blocked by the swift move of Omar Jarvis who got around the outside to prevent the score.
  • Morrisville consumed the rest of the quarter with a drive of their own that carried into the second, resulting in a 29-yard field goal off the foot of Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) for the 3-0 Morrisville lead seconds into the second frame.
  • After exchanging possessions, Morrisville started a scoring drive at the 6:36 mark of the second and within a few plays Frerichs found Quamel Jarvis down the right side of the field for a 22-yard touchdown strike, putting the Mustangs ahead 10-0 with just over three to go before the break.
  • Morrisville's defense forced Buffalo to a quick three-and-out on the ensuing host drive and worked the clock for the final 1:53 of the half, putting together an eight-play, 76-yard drive that resulted in a three-yard dish to Brandon Mapp (Staten Island, N.Y.) by Frerichs for a 17-0 halftime lead.
  • Buffalo attempted a final drive effort before the end of the half with 21 seconds remaining on the clock, but Joe Miller-LaBar (Groton, N.Y.) picked off Cam Sionko and returned the ball 28 yards to send the game into the halftime period.
  • After coming up empty in the third, Morrisville continued their late quarter drive into the fourth, where in two plays, found the endzone again, a 44-yard deep right pass to Adams just 1:05 into the final frame for the 24-0 lead.
  • Buffalo was finally able to put points on the board on the ensuing drive, sending the 30-yard field goal attempt through the uprights for the score, but Morrisville quickly responded with a scoring drive of their own on their next possession.
  • Frerichs found Mapp for a second time in the contest on a short six-yard scoring pass, completing the 65-yard drive in just seven plays and nearly four minutes time.
  • Buffalo added to their scoring on the following drive with a 14-yard pass over the middle for the touchdown but didn't get a chance to close the gap any more as Morrisville consumed the rest of the clock for the contest to collect the win.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will open Empire 8 play next Saturday on the road at reigning league champion, SUNY Cortland who sits at 3-0 to date on the season. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Cortland.
