Mustangs drop heartbreaker to Elmira in season opener

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville Men's Soccer team opened up their 2022 season on Thursday afternoon, falling to visiting Elmira College by a score of 1-0. The Mustangs had two chances late in the second half to even the score, but Elmira's keeper, Zachary Raffino came up with two big saves to secure the shutout victory.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The lone goal of the game came early in the first half when Soaring Eagle forward, Gavin Wise ripped a shot past Mustang netkeeper, Caleb Lucero (Syracuse, NY) to take the one-goal lead. Moustapha Camara was credited with the assist.
  • Mustang captains Mohamed Sy (New York, NY) and Mateo Barahona (Sag Harbor, NY) had opportunities on goal in the second half, both coming up short from finding the back of the net.
  • Morrisville and Elmira finished fairly even on the stat sheet, both tallying ten shots and posting four saves in goal, while the Mustangs held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Sophomore, Caleb Lucero made his season debut between the posts for the Mustangs, registering all four saves in all 90 minutes of action.

  • The Mustangs are back in action this weekend, traveling to SUNY Delhi for a non-conference match-up at 12:00pm.
