Mustangs roll past Wells Express

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville softball team cruised past Wells College on Tuesday afternoon, picking up two United East conference wins on the road, defeating the Express 12-2 and 23-3. The Mustangs tallied a season high 20 hits in the nightcap, improving to 5-25 overall and 5-17 in conference play.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Morrisville came out swinging in game one, scoring at least one run in all five innings played. Jessica Burlew (Hopatcong, NJ) led the Mustangs at the plate, going 3 of 3, including a double in the fourth, with three RBI's and two runs scored.
  • Brookelyn Hanley (Manchester, NY) added two hits, an RBI and two runs scored, and Hannah Godfrey (Southgate, MICH) was 2 for 3 from the plate with one run scored.
  • Kellina Murphy (Yonkers, NY) collected her second win of the season, striking out five batters and allowing just three hits in five innings pitched.
  • Morrisville opened up game two with three quick runs in the first. The Express responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to even the score going into the second. But the Mustangs countered with their own attack, scoring 20 unanswered runs to pick up the victory.
  • Burlew was unstoppable at the plate again, going 4 for 4 in game two. The sophomore centerfielder added four RBI's and four runs scored, including two more doubles to the stat sheet.
  • Jade Atherton (Greenwood, NY) filled up the boxscore alongside Burlew, finishing 4 for 5 from the plate with four runs scored and five RBI's. After recording two doubles the first and third innings, Atherton capped off the evening with her first collegiate grand slam in the bottom of the fifth.
  • In total, eight batters tallied hits in game two, setting a season high record for the Mustangs. Keehle and Makayla Lawrence (Webster, NY) both went 3 for 5 from the plate, each posting an RBI. Toni Baker (Pittsgrove, NJ) and Murphy both added two hits apiece.
  • Morrisville stole six bases in game two, with Keehle taking credit for four of them.
  • Godfrey improved to 2-9 on the mound for the Mustangs, striking out two and walking no batters.
WHAT'S NEXT
Softball returns to their home field on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Penn State-Abington in a United East doubleheader, with games scheduled to start at 3:00pm and 5:00pm.
