Morrisville men knock off St. Mary's, take over top spot in United East

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse team stunned visiting St. Mary's College (Md.) as they downed the visiting Seahawks 14-13 on Drake Field in Morrisville Saturday afternoon in United East action.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse took over the top spot in United East standings Saturday afternoon, downing visiting St. Mary's College (Md.) by a 14-13 final score on Drake Field in Morrisville.
  • Jude Brown led the Seahawks efforts with four goals and two assists, while Kyrle Preis collected 12 saves in the loss for St. Mary's.
  • Morrisville had seven contribute to it's scoring, including Roman Reiss (LaFayette, N.Y.) who posted a team best five goals.
  • Zach Nestor (Manlius, N.Y.) added a tally as well, while collecting four assists along with Luke Strong (Rochester, N.Y.) who dished out three more assisting tallies to go along with his one goal.
  • Chris Picciott (Brewerton, N.Y.), Savion Williams (Peekskill, N.Y.) and Dante Patriarco (Cortland, N.Y.) scored two apiece in the victory.
  • Dylan LaPlace (Chester, Conn.) collected 13 saves in the win between the pipes, adding two ground balls, while putting his name among the goal scorers with a tally of his own.
  • Morrisville's Soren Bredeson (Eagle, Colo.) and Kyle Farrell (Holtsville, N.Y.) each picked up five ground balls, as Bredeson collected 14 wins at the center start. Farrell also posted five caused turnovers on the day.
  • Morrisville was the first to strike on the afternoon with a tally from Picciott off the Strong dish, but a quick counter by the Seahawks leading scorer Jude Brown brought the game even at one.
  • St. Mary's took the 2-1 lead just over a minute later with their second straight strike, before an extra man tally from Strong pulled the Mustangs even at two after the opening quarter.
  • Early in the third, Morrisville's LaPlace gathered the save, and on the clear attempt launched the ball towards the open net bouncing it inside the right post for his first collegiate score and 3-2 Mustang lead.
  • Patriarco added his first of the day over a minute later to extend the lead to two, but the visitors closed out the quarter with six unanswered tallies for the 8-5 advantage at the break.
  • Reiss added his first of the game 1:16 before the half, breaking up the Seahawk scoring.
  • Morrisville opened the third with two straight from Reiss, cutting the deficit to one, and matched the St. Mary's counter tallies with goals from Patriarco and Williams before Picciott added his second of the day to tie it at 10 after three.
  • The contest saw momentum shift in favor of the hosts in the final frame, as Reiss and Williams buried early quarter tallies off feeds from Nestor, but St. Mary's wouldn't go away quietly as they remained within striking distance with matching tallies.
  • After a Williams goal to put the Mustangs ahead by two, Seahawk Cal Wilcox brought the visitors within one midway through the frame.
  • Reiss regained the two-goal advantage for Morrisville with his fifth of the afternoon with the snipe from the left, but a mere 10 seconds later St. Mary's was knocking on the door with a tally from Ethan Little.
  • Holding the 13-12 lead, Nestor gave the hosts the two-goal cushion off the feed from Strong, but as with the rest of the quarter, St. Mary's added an extra man tally with 15 seconds to go, making it a 14-13 ball game.
  • St. Mary's won the ensuing faceoff and in the closing seconds their final attempt to even it up sailed wide and Morrisville picked up the thrilling win.

  • Morrisville returns to the field next Saturday, hosting LaRoche University at 1 p.m. on Drake Field in United East play.
