Morrisville women bow out of NCAA Tournament, finish season at 19-8

Box Score GETTYSBURG, PA – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team made a program first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament Friday night, and despite a hot first half, made an exit as they fell 77-44 to host and no. 25 ranked Gettysburg College in Gettysburg.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville women's basketball saw their season come to an end Friday night as they fell 77-44 to host Gettysburg College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in Gettysburg.
  • The program, making its first appearance in the tournament in history, looked to stun the basketball world as they took the court with a squad of just three sophomores and 10 freshmen.
  • After a stellar shooting effort in the first half that saw the Mustangs drain eight three-pointers and lead by as many as 11, Gettysburg chipped away at the Morrisville lead and come final whistle earned the win to advance to tomorrow's second round.
  • Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) led the Mustangs efforts with 14 points, adding eight rebounds and two steals to her totals, while teammate Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) collected 11 points and dished out five assists.
  • Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) and Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) each added eight, with an additional three points coming from Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.).
  • Morrisville came out of the gates on fire, outgaining the Bullets 21-12 in the opening quarter behind their prowess from beyond the arc.
  • In the opening quarter, the Mustangs hit 6-of-11 from long range, with 3-of-4 coming off the hand of Hammersley.
  • Morrisville also hit the glass hard and despite being the undersized squad, limited the Bullets on the boards, collecting 11 across the opening 15.
  • Morrisville maintained their lead in the second, carrying a four-point advantage into the locker room at the break, again striking twice from long range, while connecting on 3-of-5 from the free throw line.
  • A slow start to the third found the Mustangs behind quickly, as Gettysburg started to find their shooting rhythm hitting 56% from the floor while limiting the Mustangs to a total of five points in the frame.
  • Despite an effort to make a comeback in the fourth, Gettysburg pulled away with the win, adding to their total to post the 77-44 advancing victory.
