Morrisville men open United East slate with win

Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The SUNY Morrisville men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 United East schedule Friday evening with a 10-6 league win over host Penn College in a rematch of last year's championship final.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Visiting SUNY Morrisville rattled off four unanswered second quarter tallies Friday evening to give them the four-goal edge heading into the break, and enough of a lead to top host Penn College by a 10-6 United East opener in Williamsport.
The contest, a rematch of last year's league tournament final, saw a back-and-forth battle through the opening quarter before the Mustangs carried the four goal advantage into the half.
Dante Patriarco (Cortland, N.Y.) scored the first tally for Morrisville to pull the Mustangs even with the Wildcats who collected their first five minutes earlier.
Penn regained the lead a minute later, but Roman Reiss (LaFayette, N.Y.) tied it up at two with 2:19 to go in the opening frame, kicking off a 5-0 Mustang run that carried into the second quarter.
Reiss notched his second of the contest on the extra man, before the Mustangs rattled off three unanswered tallies within two and a half minutes time, including one from Savion Williams (Peekskill, N.Y.) for the two-goal advantage.
After Williams notched the score, Patriarco followed with his second just over a minute later, and Zach Nestor (Manlius, N.Y.) posted his first of the game with 1:18 remaining before halftime, and a four-goal Mustang lead.
As in the opening quarter, both teams traded scores in the third, before two back-to-back scores in the second minute of the final frame extended the lead to five for the Mustangs.
Luke Strong (Rochester, N.Y.) notched the unassisted goal at the 13:55 mark before Nestor posted his second of the night 44 ticks later.
Penn collected two straight to cut the deficit to three, but a final strike from Evan Kistner (Fulton, N.Y.) put the game away for the Mustangs, who opened league action with the victory.
Patriarco finished the contest with the hat trick, netting three goals, while Nestor and Reiss each finished with two. Nestor also collected an assist.
Kistner added two assists to his goal, alongside Peter Pina (Culver City, Calif.) who also assisted two.
Soren Bredeson (Eagle, Colo.) proved effective at the center start for the Mustangs, winning 11-of-19 faceoffs, while pocking up six ground balls.
Zack Mabry (Suffern, N.Y.) added another six ground balls for the Mustangs, causing two turnovers on the night.
Dylan LaPlace (Chester, Conn.) turned away 12 to register the win between the pipes, including a game high five in the second quarter.

WHAT'S NEXT:

Morrisville will head to Wells College on Tuesday, before returning home to Drake to host St. Mary's College for the first of the programs meetings.
