Morrisville men drop decision to St. Mary's

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville men's basketball team battled back and forth with league leading St. Mary's College of Maryland, but fell short as the visiting Seahawks collected the 85-77 United East win in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland maintained their position at the top of the league standings Friday evening as they posted an 85-77 United East win over a tough battle with host SUNY Morrisville.
  • The Mustangs battled back and forth with the Seahawks throughout the contest, until a late game push from the free throw line widened the deficit and St. Mary's picked up the league win.
  • Tron Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with 17 points, adding five rebounds to his totals, while teammate Michael Litchfield (St. Albans, N.Y.) contributed 16 to go along with four assists.
  • Noah Armstrong (Cortland, N.Y.) came off the bench and had a huge first half for the hosts, netting 10 on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting effort.
  • Mike Green (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with eight rebounds.
  • Morrisville outgained St. Mary's in shooting on the night, hitting 50.8% of shots from the floor, while limiting the visitors to a 42.4% effort that included 22.2% from beyond the arc.
  • The difference in the contest proved to be the effort from the free throw line, where the Seahawks connected on 25 of a game total 26 attempts, while the Mustangs struggled hitting 10-of-18.
  • After trailing by four at the break, Morrisville maintained striking distance in the second half, taking a three-point lead with just over five minutes to go.
  • St. Mary's countered the Mustangs advantage with a long ball from the top of the key to tie the contest at 70, and on their ensuing possession added another from beyond the arc to shift the game back in favor of the Maryland squad.
  • Litchfield made it a one possession game with three minutes to go, but the consistent effort by the visitors from the charity stripe sealed the win down the stretch, hitting all eight attempts.

  • Morrisville returns to their home court tomorrow, hosting Gallaudet in a 1 p.m. United East match up.
