Men’s Hockey Suffer OT Heartbreak against Red Dragons

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Mustangs dropped a back and forth State Universities of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons.

  • Records: Morrisville 7-13-2 (2-11-0 SUNYAC), Cortland 12-9-2 (7-5-2 SUNYAC) 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute of action in the first period, capitalizing on a power play opportunity.
  • Cameron Clark (Daytona Beach, Fla.) picked up the goal with a shot from the right faceoff circle.  Noah Holm (Toronto, Ont.) and Luca Esposito (Bolton, Ont.) assisted on the tally.
  • Morrisville held the 1-0 lead through the remainder of the first and into the second period.
  • However, the Red Dragons capitalized on a power play opportunity of their own at the 11:45 mark in the second.
  • The Mustangs responded just over three minutes later as Jensen Dodge (West Lebanon, N.H.) went top shelf from the end line to take back the lead.  Rich Hart (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Brett Tibbs (Mt. Airy, Md.) picked up the assists.
  • Jensen's tally was the first of his collegiate career.
  • Unfortunately, Cortland picked up another power play goal at the 18:04 mark of the second to tie the score, 2-2.
  • The two squads skated toe-to-toe for the bulk of the third period until the Red Dragons were whistled for two penalties within 31 seconds in the waning minutes of regulation.
  • The Mustangs were able to put 5 shots on goal during the 5v3 and 5v4 opportunities, but Cortland was able to stave off the attack and force the contest into overtime.
  • Morrisville and Cortland both put shots on goal during overtime, but a stunning 2v1 breakaway goal by the Red Dragons at the 3:32 mark put the game away.
  • Garrett Boyonoski (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) tallied 38 saves in net for the Mustangs.
