Walkers 28 leads Morrisville women to convincing win over Abington

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 United East slate Friday night on the road at Penn St. Abington, and walked away with a convincing 91-54 victory to mark their first win of the season in league action.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Sophomore Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) scored a team high 28 points and snagged 11 rebounds for the double-double, leading the visiting SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team to a United East win over host Penn St. Abington Friday evening.
  • The Mustangs, who posted the 91-54 league win, shot 44.9% from the floor on the night, as three others joined Walker with double figures in scoring.
  • Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) posted 14 points on her 4-for-6 performance from long range, adding three assists to her totals.
  • Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) and Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.) each added 10 points, while Vieira dished out a team high eight assists.
  • The all-around team effort saw the Mustangs hold the 49-34 advantage on the glass, including a 22-13 mark in offensive rebounds.
  • Morrisville jumped out to a 22-12 lead after the opening quarter, running wild as they overwhelmed the Nittany Lions with their offensive game, before doubling their total to a 42-24 advantage at the break.
  • Abington collected the first bucket of the game and held a 4-2 advantage until a 14-2 run by the Mustangs put the Lions behind by 10 midway through the opening frame.
  • Morrisville increased their lead to as many as 18 in the second quarter, the differential held at the half, as Josely Medina (Florida, N.Y.) hit a three for the 42-24 Mustang lead midway through the contest.
  • The Mustangs put together a 21-7 run midway through the third quarter, nailing 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, while collecting three additional buckets from the floor to open up their lead to 31.
  • Morrisville put the game out of reach in the fourth, capping off the team's effort with a jumper from Anastasia Edwards (Morris, N.Y.) for the 91-54 final.

  • Morrisville will return to the court next Saturday at Utica University, facing the Pioneers in a noon tip in Utica.
