Mustangs run past Utica in fourth with hot shooting from beyond arc

UTICA, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team ran past host Utica University in the fourth quarter as they shot better than 63% from beyond the arc in the final frame for the 79-71 cross town win in Utica.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville women's basketball went 7-for-11 from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter alone to down host Utica University by a 79-71 final score in Utica Saturday afternoon.
  • Morrisville outgunned the Pioneers in the long ball, hitting 15-of-35 (42.9%) across the contest.
  • Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with 22 points, contributing to the three-pointer game as she nailed 4-of-6.
  • Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) added four three-pointers as well, finishing with 17 points and five assists, also collecting three steals.
  • Morrisville put together a strong run in the fourth, fueled by Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) who hit three straight from the wing, collecting a total five three-pointers as she finished with 15 points on the day.
  • Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) led the Mustangs with 11 rebounds, while assisting four, as fellow teammate Anna Neufeld (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) snagged seven to contribute to the rebounding game, adding eight points and dishing out four assists.
  • Morrisville and Utica entered the final quarter tied at 56, and within 13 seconds of the start of the frame, Hammersley hit a three to kick of a 17-0 run for the Mustangs, burying the Pioneers.
  • Neufeld hit a jumper from the elbow for Morrisville to extend the lead to five just a minute into the fourth, before Hammersley hit her second three-pointer of the quarter.
  • Walker forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession, Hammersley found Colone-Microni wide open on the wing for the long ball and followed with two more three-pointers to add to the Mustangs run.
  • Utica broke their scoring slump with two free throws at the 4:21 mark and added one more at 3:24, but as with the rest of the quarter, Morrisville struck again from behind the arc with a three from Vieira along the baseline.
  • Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.) added one of her own at 2:20 to extend the visitor lead to 20.
  • Utica chipped away at the Morrisville lead over the final two minutes of the contest but ran out of time as the Mustangs ran away with the win.
  • Morrisville limited Utica to a 27% shooting effort over the final three quarters of the contest for a 35.3% effort, while putting together a 40.6% effort of their own from the floor throughout the contest.
  • The Mustangs were able to capture 14 points off turnovers and add another 14 in second chance points.

  • Morrisville will wrap up the first half of the season Monday with a non-conference contest against Hartwick. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Morrisville on the Mustangs home court.
