Morrisville women fall short in extra time

Box Score ALFRED, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season Tuesday night on the road at Alfred University, falling in non-conference action by a 91-84 final score in extra time.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season campaign Tuesday evening on the road, falling in extra time to host Alfred University by a 91-84 non-conference final in Alfred.
  • Junior Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) kicked off her junior season with a double-double to lead the visitors, netting 23 points and snagging 14 rebounds, while three additional teammates posted double-digits in the outing.
  • Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) added 18 points, nearly missing a double-double performance with eight rebounds, while adding three assists and two steals, while Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) nailed three from long range to collect 14 points on the night.
  • Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) added 11 int eh loss, stealing two.
  • Morrisville led 36-35 at the half before Alfred outgained the Mustangs by five in the third to head into the final frame of regulation with a 60-56 lead.
  • Morrisville trailed by two with just over two minutes to go in the fourth quarter before a deep corner three from Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.) gave the visitors the one-point lead over the hosts.
  • A layup by Alfred put them back in front by one, but Becker added another from the same spot to regain the slim advantage for the Mustangs and after an equalizing layup on the opposite end, both teams saw the game tied at 75.
  • Walker hit a layup with under a minute to go in regulation, but once again Alfred responded with 14 seconds remaining to force the extra time, where they were able to jump ahead by five and seal the win down the stretch.
  • In their first outing since March, Morrisville shot 36.1% from long range, and 83.3% from the free throw line, collecting 26 points in the paint and another 15 off turnovers, while shooting 40.3% from the floor on the night collectively.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will return to the court Friday at Oswego, facing cross town rival SUNY Poly in the opening round of the Max Ziel Tournament hosted by the Lakers. Opening tip is scheduled for 5 p.m.
