WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball charged past visiting SUNY Poly in the second half of play Wednesday evening in Morrisville, shooting over 40% from the floor while draining eight second half three-pointers to collect the 65-49 win.
  • Sophomore's Dezia Becker (Endicott, N.Y.) and Abby VandeWalker (Johnstown, N.Y.) were lights out for the Mustangs from long range, hitting 60% apiece as they combined for 11 three's of the teams total 14 on the night.
  • VandeWalker led the way with 18 points, draining 6-of-10 from long range, while collecting a steal and adding two rebounds to her totals.
  • Becker, point guard for the Mustangs, had the hot hand from the corner, hitting 5-of-8 while assisting three others.
  • SUNY Poly held the slim 40-36 advantage on the glass, but not without a double-digit effort on the boards from Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) who collected a team high 11, while adding eight points and five assists to her totals.
  • Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) added 10, recording nine points and three assists, while teammate Josley Medina (Florida, N.Y.) added seven points, two from long range.
  • Morrisville jumped out to a 14-10 first quarter lead before Poly put together a late rally in the second to send the game into the halftime period knotted at 24.
  • VandeWalker and Becker hit back-to-back three's for the Mustangs for the six-point lead midway through the second, but a three from Kelsey Meca followed by two free throws in the final minute of the quarter evented the score at 24.
  • Poly took an early three-point lead in the third, but Morrisville's Becker countered with one of her own to pull the Mustangs even, kicking off a 13-2 run for the hosts that put them in front 37-29.
  • During that run, Becker collected a total of three from behind the arc.
  • Poly was able to tie the contest with three minutes in the quarter, but Medina came off the bench to nail one from the left wing and Hammersley followed with one of her own to regain the two-possession lead for the hosts, sending the game into the fourth with a 47-39 Morrisville lead.
  • Morrisville opened the fourth quarter with a 14-2 run, burying the Wildcats to a 20-point deficit, one that proved to be difficult to overcome as the Mustangs posted the convincing win.
  • Morrisville forced 17 total Poly miscues, capitalizing for 20 points off turnovers, and took advantage of their ability to get out quick in transition with 10 fast break points.
  • The Mustangs limited Poly to a 26.8% shooting effort, while posting a 35.6% outing of their own, including 35% from behind the arch where they drained 14 total three's.
  • Molly Burdick led the Wildcats with 16 points, collecting the double-double with 11 rebounds and adding three steals and three assists.
