Morrisville women outlast Berks, claim United East win, 3-2

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host SUNY Morrisville women's volleyball withstood a late Penn State Berks rally Saturday afternoon to collect their first league win of the season, topping the visiting Nittany Lions 3-2 in match action in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville women's volleyball opened the 2022 United East play with a 3-2 match decision over visiting Penn St. Berks, withstanding a late rally to claim the victory in the fifth and deciding set.
  • Sophomore Emily Huppee (Liberty Hill, Tex.) led the Mustangs with 26 kills on the afternoon, hitting .523 from the floor as she added two aces and 17 digs to her tallies.
  • Brianna Gates (Eagle, Colo.) also threw up double figures at the net, collecting 16 kills, while adding 11 digs to her totals.
  • Keelin Baker (Vestal, N.Y.) rounded out the leading attackers for the Mustangs with 12 kills while teammate Kayla Sheasby (Hood River, Ore.) collected 21 digs.
  • Siobhan Moore (Leyden, Mass.) posted 51 assists.
  • Berks took the 1-0 set lead after edging Morrisville 25-22 in the open frame, but a dominating .44 hitting performance in the second found the Mustangs pulling the match even with a 25-10 second set win.
  • Morrisville took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-17 win in the third, but Berks was able to outgain the Mustangs in the fourth, 27-25, forcing the deciding set.
  • In the fifth, a kill by Gates put the Mustangs in front by three, before Moore served up three straight points to extend the advantage to six.
  • Berks was able to pull the contest within four, but a kill by Baker gave Morrisville the 14-9 lead where Huppee and Kathryn Dolan (Quincy, Calif.) put the game away with a block at the net for the Mustangs on the ensuing Lion attack attempt.
  • Morrisville finished hitting .270 from the floor across the match, outgaining Berks 10-7 in service aces, and 59-56 in kils.

  • Morrisville will look to make it two straight with a bout against Harrisburg in the final match of the day at 4 p.m.
