WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville women trailed by four at the half to visiting Penn St. Harrisburg, and used a 22-14 third quarter to post the come-from-behind 59-54 United East win Saturday afternoon in Morrisville.
  • The all-around team effort saw nine Mustangs contribute to the scoring, including Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) who turned up the heat in the second to collect 12 of her game total 14 points.
  • Vieira also added seven rebounds to her totals, while assisting two, but defensively had a monster of a game with six steals and three blocked shots.
  • Hammersley also contributed double digits behind her 11 points and four boards, while Olivia Brunner (East Branch, N.Y.) chipped in 12 off the bench for the Mustangs, also snagging five from the glass and blocking another two.
  • Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) contributed eight, earning all from the free throw line, while assisting three and collecting a steal.
  • Morrisville edged the Nittany Lions after the opening quarter, 10-9, but Harrisburg utilized an 11-2 run in the second to head into the locker room with a 28-24 halftime lead.
  • Harrisburg opened with back-to-back buckets to increase their lead to nine, but Morrisville shifted the tables and put together an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to just one.
  • Harrisburg made it a two-possession ball game with three straight free throws, but Brunner nailed one from beyond the arc on the left wing to again cut the lead to one with 3:11 to go in the frame.
  • After extending the lead back to four, momentum shifted in favor of the hosts as Colone-Microni was fouled on a three-pointer attempt with 2:09 on the clock and Harrisburg was whistled for a technical.
  • Colone-Microni hit three from the charity stripe and Vieira added two of her own to regain the lead for the hosts.
  • Morrisville added another from the line, and Carli Pardee (South Kortright, N.Y.) put away the fast break layup after a Abby Vandewalker (Johnstown, N.Y.) steal to send the game into the fourth quarter with a 46-42 Morrisville lead.
  • Early in the fourth, Pardee collected the steal and Vandewalker added the fast break score to extend the lead to multiple possessions, but a persistent Harrisburg squad tied the contest at 49 behind a 7-1 spurt with 5:27 to go.
  • Harrisburg converted three straight from the line for a three-point lead with under three minutes to go, but Brunner sunk two from the charity stripe to make it a one point game.
  • A costly turnover under the basket for Harrisburg led to a Brunner layup with 1:18 remaining, and Morrisville one-point lead.
  • The Mustangs defense caused Harrisburg to turn the ball over on two consecutive possessions, and forced the hosts to the free throw line, where Hammersley and Vieira each hit both shots, sealing the thrilling win and giving Morrisville the weekend sweep.
  • Morrisville forced Harrisburg to turn the ball over 21 times, capitalizing as they collected 24 points off Nittany Lion miscues, while adding a total 16 on the fast break.
