Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team took over second place in the overall United East league standings Friday night, as they fought their way to a 56-52 win over visiting Lancaster Bible College in Morrisville.

THE BASICS:
  • Final Score: Morrisville 56, Lancaster Bible 52 (halftime: Morrisville 27-25)
  • Location: STUAC Gymnasium, Morrisville, N.Y.
  • Records: Morrisville 10-6, 6-2 United East; Lancaster Bible 8-10, 5-4 United East

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville women's basketball trailed by as many as five in the final quarter of Friday night's United East action in Morrisville against Lancaster Bible College but took advantage of visitor miscues and their presence on the boards to battle back for a thrilling 56-52 win over the Chargers in league play.
  • Morrisville, who outgained Lancaster 19-5 in second chance points on the night, collected 15 offensive boards behind the persistence of Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) who totaled eight of her own, including a critical offensive snag with seconds remaining.
  • Hammersley also added 14 points and posted a total 14 rebounds for the double-double, joining the high scoring of Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) who led the way with 15 points, adding five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
  • Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) collected 10 points to go along with four assists and five rebounds, rounding out the Mustang leaderboard.
  • The Mustangs avenged the early season loss to the Chargers to pull ahead to second overall in league standings, with a 6-2 league slate heading into the dual with third place Penn St. Harrisburg tomorrow afternoon.
  • Morrisville headed into the final quarter with a slim three-point lead after both teams battled back and forth throughout the first three frames.
  • A three by Mikayla Via 1:25 into the fourth tied the contest at 41 and kicked off a mini spurt for the visitors who went on a 10-2 burst to claim the five point advantage midway through.
  • A pull up jumper by Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) brought the Mustangs within one possession, and after a steal by Hammersley on the defensive end of the floor, Vieira added a fast break tally to her totals to bring the hosts within one point.
  • Colone-Microni gave Morrisville their first lead of the frame with 3:50 to go with her driving layup in the paint, and Hammersley added another to extend the lead to three on the ensuing possession.
  • Following a steal by Vieira and two free throws, Morrisville entered the final two minutes of the contest with a five-point lead.
  • Lancaster cut the deficit down to three with 14 seconds to go with a layup by Lizzy Tilton, but a quick foul sent Morrisville to the line for two.
  • After missing the first the ball bounced off the front of the rim on the second and Hammersley battled for the ball to collect the offensive board and maintain possession for the hosts.
  • Another Lancaster foul sent Walker to the line where she hit the backend of two attempts, giving Morrisville the four-point lead, and after a quick timeout by the visitors, a three-point effort fell short and Vieira hung tight on the defensive board to secure the win.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • Morrisville will face off against Penn St. Harrisburg tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Morrisville, a rematch that saw both teams battle to a two-point final decision in favor of the Mustangs in December.
