Morrisville women run past Penn in second half for win

Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.  – The SUNY Morrisville women's basketball team used a 22-9 third quarter offensive blitz to run past Penn College Saturday afternoon in United East action in Williamsport for the 69-45 league win.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Visiting SUNY Morrisville women's basketball held host Penn College to just three points in the opening quarter and raced past the Wildcats in the third as they collected a 69-45 win
  • Cara Walker (Phelps, N.Y.) led the charge for the Mustangs with 19 points and added seven rebounds while dishing out three assists.
  • Rachel Vieira (Caruthers, Calif.) added 13, hitting 3-of-5 from behind the arc, while posting six boards, as teammate Brooke Hammersley (Weedsport, N.Y.) notched 11 points and seven boards for Morrisville.
  • Taylor Colone-Microni (Oneonta, N.Y.) rounded out the leader board in scoring for Morrisville with her 10 points.
  • Despite a slow start for Morrisville in the opening quarter the Mustangs defense was able to hold the hosts to just three points on a five-percent effort while claiming a 10-point lead of their own after the first 10.
  • Penn chipped away at the Mustang lead in the second, claiming their first and only lead at the 3:14 mark with a layup by Aubrey Stetts, but Morrisville responded quickly to finish the quarter with a 7-0 run to send the game into the break with a 23-17 visitor lead.
  • Morrisville continued momentum in the third with an opening 6-0 spurt to race out to an 11-point lead, and limited the hosts to just three scores and two more from the free throw line to head into the final frame with a 45-26 advantage.
  • The Mustangs didn't let off the gas in the fourth, as Walker powered her way to eight of her total points on a perfect shooting effort from the floor in the frame, leading the charge for a near 65% shooting effort for the 'Stangs.
  • Morrisville collected 22 points off Penn College turnovers, and collected a total 32 in the paint on the afternoon while shooting 39.4% across all quarters of action.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville will look to avenge an early season league loss to Lancaster Bible on Friday, Jan. 28 in Morrisville, hosting the Chargers in a 7 p.m. battle on the Mustangs home court.
