Morrisville field hockey powers past Wells, 9-0

Cummings nets 11 points in win

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Senior forward Heather Cummings (Akron, N.Y.) posted a season high four goals Wednesday night, leading the host SUNY Morrisville field hockey team past visiting Wells College by a 9-0 final score.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville picked up a non-conference win Wednesday evening in Morrisville, powering past visiting Wells College as they poured in a season high nine goals on Drake Field in Morrisville.
  • Senior Heather Cummings (Akron, N.Y.) notched a season high 11 total points to contribute to the win, collecting a team best four goals and adding three assists, including all three tallies in the second half of play.
  • Camberly VanValkenburg (Walton, N.Y.) and Alexis Shaunessy (Randolph, N.J.) each added two to the win, with VanValkenburg collecting an assist for five points on the night.
  • Erika Herrman (Oneida, N.Y.) added one of her own in the first quarter of action off the dish from Cummings, assisting two others as well across the contest.
  • Mary Klecha (Greene, N.Y.) rounded out all team scoring contributing an assist.
  • Morgan Dueber (Owego, N.Y.) earned the shut out with two stops in the victory.
  • Morrisville opened all scoring just 5:33 into the contest as Shaunessy tipped in the drive from Herrman, adding another just over a minute later off the cross from Cummings for the early 2-0 host lead.
  • Within minutes, Herrman made it a 3-0 advantage for the Mustangs with the sweep on the left post.
  • The Mustangs added three more to their lead in the second, including a strike from VanValkenburg from the center of the circle at the 16:16 mark, before adding her second of the night minutes later off the sweep in from Cummings.
  • Cummings collected her first of four straight just before the half for the 6-0 Mustang lead, sweeping Herrman's drive from the top past the Wells keeper.
  • Cummings posted her second of the night just a minute into the second half, weaving through the Express defense before flicking the ball into the back of the cage for a 7-0 Mustang lead.
  • In the fourth frame, Cummings struck twice more, the first at 48:49 as Klecha drove the ball into the circle from the top, and Cummings connecting for the tap in; and another off the center pass from the right from VanValkenburg.
  • Morrisville held the 25-8 advantage in shots on the night.

  • Morrisville will hit the road Saturday, resuming SUNYAC play with a bout at SUNY Geneseo. Opening whistle is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Geneseo.
