Late second half goal lifts Mustangs over Elmira College

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville men's soccer scored a penalty kick goal late in the second half to defeat the Elmira College Soaring Eagles by a score of 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore, Mohamed Sy (New York, NY) led the Mustangs to victory with the long score of the game.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Neither team dominated possession in the first half, with Elmira holding a slight edge in shots, 7-3. Despite three corner kick opportunities for the Soaring Eagles in the first 45' of action, neither team was able to find the back of the net, entering halftime tied at 0-0.
  • The Mustang defense maintained control in the second half, holding Elmira to just five shots in the second half, with both teams tallying just two corner kicks apiece.
  • Sy's penalty kick goal came with less than six minutes to play in the game, after a handball was called on Elmira in the penalty box. The sophomore midfielder ripped a shot to the bottom left corner of the net, registering his third goal of the season for the Mustangs.
  • Junior goalkeeper, Cody Welkley (North Rose, NY) earned the shutout victory for Morrisville, recording his third win of the season.

  • Morrisville men's soccer returns to United East conference play this weekend when they travel to Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday afternoon for a 12:00pm contest.
