Mustangs fourth quarter comeback falls short in 27-14 loss to St. Lawrence

Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Host SUNY Morrisville football dropped their home debut Friday evening, falling in non-conference action to visiting St. Lawrence University 27-14 on Drake Field in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • Host SUNY Morrisville football made their first appearance on Drake Field Friday night under the lights, falling in non-conference action by a 27-14 final score against St. Lawrence University in Morrisville.
  • Morrisville trailed 20-7 at the half before putting together a fourth quarter comeback attempt, but fell short as the visiting Saints utilized three turnovers in the final frame to seal the non-conference win, the first on Drake Field against the Mustangs.
  • Both teams played fairly even offensively, accumulating over 400 yards total offense each, but it was the Saints that held the slight edge, outgaining the Mustangs 421 to 416 yards.
  • The Mustangs got 315 total through the passing game, connecting for an average 13.1 per completion as they connected on 24-of-53 attempts.
  • An additional 101 net yards were gained on the ground, one for a rushing score early in the fourth.
  • Freshman Alek Britten (Schenectady, N.Y.) went 23-for-50 on the night for 298 yards, while Kaden Gabler (Camden, N.Y.) added another 17 yards on his one pass completion, a scoring throw in the second quarter.
  • Justin Donnelly (Meridian, N.Y.) led all ball carriers with 35 yards on three carries, while Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 32 on his six runs.
  • Toure' Hall Jr. (Stratford, Conn.) had a breakout game for the Mustangs receiving unit, pulling in a total 10 for 142 yards on the night, including a long 57-yards.
  • Jarrell Chaney (Albany, N.Y.) added another 60 on his four receptions, including one in the endzone for a touchdown score.
  • Defensively, Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) had a monster of an outing for the Mustangs, as he collected a collegiate high 17 total stops, four solo, adding one sack for a loss of six.
  • Dante McGowan (Rochester, N.Y.) added another eight for the unit, while teammates Giovanni Vigliotti (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Roland Bevans (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each collected an interception.
  • Vigliotti also registered two pass breakups on the night.
  • Tyler Grochot led the Saints under center with his 16-completion night for 242 yards and two touchdown scores.
  • Peyton Schmitt led the St. Lawrence ball carriers with 65 net yards on 13 carries, while Jamie Battaglia added another 61 on his 18 attempts, one of which was a scoring carry.
  • Sean McCormack collected 91 yards receiving for the Saints, with another 61 coming from Robert Coll.
  • Jacob Dreisbach led the defensive unit with 11 stops, with Brian Casazza adding another eight. Each also recorded a pass breakup.
  • After exchanging possessions early on in the quarter, St. Lawrence was first to strike, as a 17-yard pass play from Grochot to Coll gave the visitors the 7-0 lead on the seven-play, 79-yard drive at the 7:34 mark of the opening quarter.
  • St. Lawrence added to their lead with 52 seconds to go, as Ian Doin put the ball through the uprights for the 28-yard field goal and 10-0 Saints lead.
  • Morrisville was able to climb within three early in the second as Gabler stepped back and launched the pass to Chaney in the right corner of the endzone, completing the 63-yard drive at the 12:29 mark.
  • Once again Doin connected for the Saints, nailing the 32-yard field goal to regain a six point lead for the visitors on the ensuing play.
  • St. Lawrence sent the game into the halftime break with a 20-7 lead taking advantage of an interception on the Mustangs prior possession, as Battaglia ran the ball up the middle for the three-yard scoring run.
  • Morrisville pinned the visitors back on their own eight at the start of the third quarter, but the Saints extended their lead to 20, completing the 92-yard drive with a 17-yard scoring pass from Grochot to Ott at the 8:52 mark.
  • Morrisville held the Saints scoreless for the remainder of the quarter, and early in the fourth took advantage of an interception by Vigliotti on the Mustangs own five-yard line and put together their longest drive of the night, a 95-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a two-yard run from Britten to the left.
  • The Mustangs forced the Saints to a quick three-and-out on the ensuing drive, but were forced to punt on their following drive as well.
  • Morrisville's defensive gave the Mustangs momentum on the following St. Lawrence drive with an interception from Bevans that was returned to the Saints 37-yard line, but the visitors returned the favor as the tipped ball landed into the hands of Victor Gamberoni on the four.
  • The Mustangs again forced the Saints to punt and attempted to put together another drive, but Gamberoni stripped Donnelly of the ball on the carry and St. Lawrence recovered.
  • Morrisville had one final attempt with under four minutes to go in the contest, but again the Saint secondary corralled the 'Stangs and again stepped in front of the ball and collected their third interception of the night.

  • Morrisville will host Buffalo State Saturday for the college's homecoming contest at 2 p.m. on Drake Field in Morrisville.
