#6 St. Mary’s College of Maryland upsets Men’s Soccer in conference opener

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Morrisville men's soccer opened up United East play on Saturday afternoon, hosting the no. 6 nationally ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland Seahawks. The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead early in the second half, but the Seahawks scored three unanswered goals to round out the game with a 4-2 victory, remaining undefeated on the season.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • The visitors were the first on the scoreboard with a goal from Seahawk forward, Noah Gregerman in the 38' minute of action.
  • St. Mary's College of Maryland took the 1-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Mustangs 13-3 and taking four corner kicks to Morrisville's zero in the opening frame.
  • The hosts came out aggressive in the second half, with Chandley Elie recording his sixth goal of the season in the 50' minute of play. After a foul in the penalty box, Elie zipped a shot just out of reach of Seahawks' goalie Liam Delone-Bellsey, tying the game at 1-1.
  • Less than a minute later, the Mustangs took the lead when sophomore midfielder, Hans Mensah (Bronx, NY) chipped a shot up field to Justin Klaczko (Syracuse, NY) who one-timed it to the back of the net, notching his first collegiate goal.
  • The one-goal lead didn't last long for Morrisville when Seahawk's midfielder, Roshawn Panton scored the equalizer less than two minutes later.
  • St. Mary's College of Maryland would go on to score two additional unanswered goals to round out the second half. Panton posted his second score of the game at 64:35, and Casey Cruz netted the final goal for the Seahawks at 69:51.
  • The Seahawks outshot the hosts 27-8 on the day, with 15 of those shots on goal, to Morrisville's 4. The Mustangs would battle for 90 minutes without taking one corner kick, while the visitors took 9 corners in the win.
  • Senior keeper, Cody Welkley (North Rose, NY) played all 90' minutes between the pipes for the Mustangs, recording 11 saves in the loss.
  • With the win, the Seahawks record their first-ever 7-0 start in program history.

  • Morrisville men are back in action tomorrow, resuming United East conference play against the Bison of Gallaudet University at 11:00am.
